The water temperature is near freezing, and the pressure is an incredible 5,800 pounds per square inch—equivalent to an elephant standing on your thumb.
Despite these harsh conditions, life thrives. Because no plants can grow without sunlight, most deep-sea creatures survive on "marine snow," which is bits of organic matter that drift down from the upper layers of the ocean. Many organisms, like the anglerfish, have evolved bioluminescence , a chemical process that allows them to produce their own light. This light is used to attract mates or lure prey in the absolute darkness of the abyssal depths. For scientists, studying these creatures is a race against time as climate change and deep-sea mining threaten this delicate, hidden ecosystem.
