Saving Hawaiian Sea Turtles
Did you know that sea turtles return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs? Their babies are then born on that beach. When those babies get old enough to lay eggs, they go back to the same beach!
In Hawaii, there are two types of sea turtles. The green sea turtle is named for the color of its body. The hawksbill sea turtle is named for its nose, which is shaped like a bird’s beak. Both types of sea turtles spend most of their time in the water. They also spend a big part of their lives near the islands of Hawaii.
Green sea turtles are threatened. That means there are fewer green sea turtles now than in the past. If too many green sea turtles die, they will become endangered. Once animals are endangered, they may become extinct. Hawksbill sea turtles are endangered. Groups of people in Hawaii are trying to save the hawksbill sea turtles and protect the green sea turtles.
One way people are helping these sea turtles is with laws. There are laws that protect all sea turtles. People used to hunt both green and hawksbill sea turtles for food and for their beautiful shells. The shells were used to make jewelry. Now, it is illegal to hunt them or sell jewelry made with their shells.
People are also trying to help baby sea turtles stay safe. Hawksbill sea turtles lay their eggs at the edge of the beach where plants grow. Sometimes, trash washes up on the beach and gets caught in the plants, getting in the way of the baby turtles. Sometimes, baby hawksbill turtles get caught in the trash and die before they can reach the water.
Groups of people are watching beaches for signs of turtle nests. People put up small fences to keep the eggs safe from animals that try to eat turtle eggs. The people also clean up the trash to help the baby turtles find a safe path to the water.

The Long Walk Across the Stage
Tim stood proudly on the green football field of John Glenn Middle School, adjusting his neat blue collar. Today was the big day he would finally graduate from eighth grade. He felt an exciting, nervous fluttering in his stomach as the classical marching music began to play across the grass. For three full years, JGMS had been his second home. He remembered his first day in sixth grade, feeling small and completely lost in the crowded, noisy hallways. Now, he was one of the tallest students in his class, ready to head to high school in the fall.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the building opened, and the music echoed across the field. All of Tim’s classmates lined up in a neat row on the blue track, whispering happily and waving to their proud families sitting in the audience. Tim walked slowly down the center aisle, searching the crowd until he spotted his parents waving and smiling from the third row.
When Mr. Hartunian, the school principal, walked up to the microphone on the stage built on the end zone, the entire field grew quiet. One by one, students were called to the stage. When Mr. Hartunian called, "Tim Miller," Tim took a deep breath, stepped onto the wide wooden stage, and smiled. He shook the principal's hand and received his middle school diploma. At that moment, Tim realized that all his hard work had finally paid off.
Testing Information: Use this story about Tim Miller's graduation at John Glenn Middle School on the football field to answer questions 70 through 80 on the following pages. You may turn back and refer to this page at any time during the test.
