Class Setup: Whole Group Handbook & Leveled Tiers
Phase 1: The Hook & Setup (10 Mins)
Introduce students to the idea of Inference by becoming "Clue Hunters." Tell the class: "Real-life detectives don't just guess what happened; they gather physical facts (Explicit details) and match them with human behavior rules (Schema) to solve the mystery (Implicit meanings)."
Phase 2: Direct Instruction & Modeling (15 Mins)
Handbook Page 1 (Explicit vs. Implicit):
Direct students to follow along on Page 1. Emphasize the hand-pointer test: "If you can point your index finger directly at the sentence that gives you the answer, it is explicit. If you have to put on your detective glasses to read between the lines, it is implicit."
Inference Formula Model:
Write the equation on the board: Clues + Schema = Inference. Emphasize that schema is their "brain database" of human actions, reactions, and emotions.
Guided Practice (Leo's Big Day):
Read Leo's passage together. Ask: "Did the author say Leo was scared?" (No). "How do we know then?" (We know sweating palms and swallowing lumps mean nervousness because we experience that ourselves—that's our schema!).
Phase 3: Leveled & Independent Practice (25 Mins)
Distribute differentiated pages, followed by unified whole-class independent practice sheets:
Differentiated (Pages 2-4) Assign Tier A, B, or C based on student level to build proficiency using structured graphic organizers.
Independent (Pages 5-6) All students complete independent cases (The Secret Recipe & The Hidden Path) using high-contrast response spaces.
Assess & Homelink (Pages 7-8) Deliver the Exit Ticket (Page 7) to check independent mastery, and assign the Homework Case (Page 8).
Phase 4: Share & Debrief (10 Mins)
Reconvene as a class. Review one of the independent practice cases. Have students explain how they paired a physical text clue with their life experience (schema) to lock down their final character inference.
