Lesson: Conversation Ball

Total Duration: 30 Minutes

I. Warm-Up: Starting a Chat

5 Minutes

Teacher Prompt:

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something super important: conversations! Who can tell me, what are some ways we can start talking to someone? How do you say 'hello' and begin a chat?"

Wait for 2-3 student responses. Praise their contributions.

"Those are wonderful ideas! We know how to get a conversation going. But what happens after you say hello? How do we keep talking? Today, we're going to learn how to keep those conversations rolling, just like a ball!"

II. Introduce 'Give and Take'

5 Minutes

(Display Slide 1)

"Look at our slide! It says 'Keep the Conversation Ball Rolling!' A conversation is just talking with someone. Have you ever played catch with a ball? You throw it, and your friend catches it, right?"

(Pause for nods/responses)

"Well, a conversation is a lot like playing catch! When we talk, we give a comment, or say something, and the other person takes it and then gives one back by responding. It's a 'give and take' of words! We don't want to just stand there with the ball, or keep it to ourselves, do we?"

(Display Slide 2)

"Now, look at this slide: 'Don't Drop the Ball!'. We've learned how to start a conversation, but the trick is to keep it going. How do we do that? It's all about making sure your comment or question is related to what the other person just said. We don't want the ball to drop because we said something totally different!"

III. Teacher Modeling

5 Minutes

"I'm going to show you how this works. I'm going to pretend I'm starting a conversation, and then I'm going to show you how I try to keep it going. My topic is about my day yesterday."

"I really enjoyed reading a book about animals yesterday."

(Think Aloud Mode: Speak your internal thoughts clearly to the students)

"Hmm, to keep the conversation going, I could just say 'That's nice,' but that doesn't really give the ball back. I need to make a comment or ask a question about animals or books to keep it rolling. Maybe I could ask about their favorite animal, or if they've read any good books lately? Yes, that sounds good!"

"Do you have a favorite animal, or have you read any good books lately? See how my question was about what I just talked about? That keeps the conversation ball in the air!"

IV. Student Practice: Game

10 Minutes

"Alright, now it's your turn to practice! I'm going to give each of you a small piece of paper from our All About Me sheet. These have some fun ideas for things you can talk about. Don't worry about filling them out yet, just look at the ideas on them."

(Distribute cut-out sections of the worksheet)

"Now, gather around, and let's get ready for the Conversation Ball Game! Remember, listen carefully, make a related comment or question, and try to keep the ball in the air for at least three turns! If the ball drops, no worries, we'll help pick it up. Let's begin!"

(Facilitate the game using the Game Guide and the ball/beanbag)

V. Wrap-Up: Reflection

5 Minutes

"Great job everyone! You were all fantastic at keeping that conversation ball rolling. Let's come back together for a moment. What did you notice helped keep the conversation going in our game? What did you have to do to make sure the ball didn't drop?"

(Allow a few student shares)

"Exactly! It's all about listening carefully and making comments that fit right in. Now that you're conversation champions, I want you to try using these skills with your friends and family! See how many conversations you can keep rolling. Great work today!"
