Bridge of Trust

Students will understand and demonstrate trustworthiness by working collaboratively to build a "trust bridge" and committing to personal reliability.

Why This Lesson?

This lesson introduces the concept of trustworthiness through an engaging short film and a hands-on group activity. Students will watch the short film 'Crossing the Bridge,' participate in a group activity to build a 'trust bridge,' create a trustworthiness pledge, and engage in a discussion to reinforce the ideas of trust and reliability.

Learning Phases

5 min Phase 1

Introduction: The Foundation

Briefly introduce the concept of trustworthiness. Explain that trustworthiness means being reliable and doing what you say you will do.
Share a simple example of trustworthiness, such as keeping a promise to a friend.

5 min Phase 2

Visual Connection: "Crossing the Bridge"

Show the short film Crossing the Bridge.
Ask students to pay attention to how the characters show trustworthiness (or lack thereof) throughout the story.

15 min Phase 3

Hands-On: Build a Trust Bridge

Divide students into small groups and provide building materials (blocks, LEGOs, etc.).
Task: Work together to build a bridge that can hold a small object without collapsing.
Emphasize that they must rely on and trust each other to create a stable bridge.
Walk around and provide support; once finished, test the bridges with a weight.

5 min Phase 4

Reflection & Discussion

Engage students in a discussion using the Discussion Guide.
Focus questions: What made your bridge strong? How did you trust each other? How is a bridge like real-life trust?

5 min Phase 5

Commitment: The Trust Pledge

Provide each student with the Trustworthiness Pledge.
Students write their names and sign to commit to being reliable.
Discuss as a class why this commitment matters in the classroom.

5 min Phase 6

Wrap-Up & Individual Work

Summarize: Trustworthiness = being reliable and keeping promises.
Hand out the Trusty Builder Worksheet for individual reflection.
