Introduction

Teacher: “Alright, everyone, please turn your attention to the screen. On the projector, you’ll see Slide 1 of our Own It Choices Matter Slide Deck. Good morning! Today we are going to learn about responsibility and what it means to take ownership of our choices. When we own our actions, we show respect for ourselves and others.”

Teacher: “Let’s start by talking about the word responsibility. Can anyone tell me what responsibility means? Turn to your partner, share one idea, and be ready to share with the class. You have 30 seconds.”

(Pause for partner talk)

Teacher: “Who can share their idea?”

(Record responses on anchor chart paper.)

Teacher: “Great thinking! So far we have: making choices we can stand behind, accepting what happens because of our actions, and learning from mistakes. Responsibility means all of those things. Ownership is when we say, ‘This was my choice, and I learn from it.’”

Teacher: “Why do you think responsibility matters here in our classroom and at home?”

05-10 MIN

Discussion of Scenarios

Teacher: “Now let’s look at Slide 3: Choices and Consequences.”

Teacher (reading slide): “You accidentally spill paint on the classroom floor. What responsible choice can you make in this situation?”

(Wait for students to think; call on volunteers.)

Teacher: “Fantastic ideas! Someone said you could tell the teacher and help clean it up. What might happen if you own your mistake?”

(Record consequences on anchor chart paper.)

Teacher: “To practice more, I’m handing out a few Responsibility Role-Play Cards. Let’s read one together.”

10-20 MIN

Role-Play Activity

Teacher: “Time to get into groups! Count off by threes to form teams of three or four. Each group will get one or two Responsibility Role-Play Cards.”

Teacher: “In your group, plan a short role-play that shows you making a responsible choice and owning it. Remember to show these steps: 1) Pause and think before you act; 2) Show the responsible choice; 3) Reflect on how it helps you and others. You have five minutes to prepare. I’ll come around to help.”

20-27 MIN

Reflection and Commitment

Teacher: “Wonderful role-plays! Now, I have Own It! Commitment Worksheets for each of you.”

Teacher: “On your worksheet, write one real choice you want to own this week. Then, list three steps you will take to make that choice responsibly—just like we practiced.”

(Pause while students write.)

Teacher: “When you finish, turn to a partner and share your commitment. Ask each other, ‘How will you remember to own this choice?’”

27-30 MIN

Closing and Pledge

Teacher: “Let’s gather back at our anchor chart. We learned today that responsibility means making choices we can stand behind, accepting consequences, and learning from mistakes. We saw how owning our choices helps us grow.”

Teacher: “Now, please stand up and join me for our class pledge. I’ll say a line, and you repeat after me.”

“I own my choices…” (Pause for students)

“…and learn from them.” (Pause for students)
