Core Philosophy

In an alternative education setting, students often have heightened sensitivity to perceived threats or disrespect. This lesson moves away from "moralizing" behavior and instead focuses on **biological mechanics** and **survival strategies**. We frame de-escalation not as "being nice," but as "staying in control" and "keeping your power."

Key Concept: The EAR Method

E

Empathy

Name the emotion. "I hear that you're angry." This validates the feeling without validating the behavior.

A

Attention

Give them the floor. "Tell me what's going on." Listening acts as a pressure release valve.

R

Respect

Reinforce their worth. "I value our relationship too much to let it blow up like this."

Session Goals

Identify internal physical cues of anger (Amgydala Hijack).
Map personal "high voltage" triggers.
Practice verbal and physical de-escalation techniques.

Facilitation Guide

1. The Hook (Slides 1-2)

Goal: Normalize the biology of anger.

Ask: "Who has ever done something while they were mad that they totally regretted 10 minutes later?" Explain that this is the "Amygdala Hijack." It's not a character flaw; it's a survival response that doesn't fit the classroom.

2. Mapping Triggers (Slide 3)

Goal: Identify the "Circuit Breaker" moments.

Be real about triggers. For many of our students, "disrespect" is the #1 trigger. Discuss why respect is so high-stakes. Transition to identifying *physical* triggers—clenched jaws, heat in the face—this is the warning light on the dashboard.

3. The EAR Method (Slide 4)

Goal: Practical application.

Demonstrate EAR. Pick a neutral student or co-teacher. Have them "yell" about something trivial (like a stolen pen). Model using EAR: "I can tell you're really mad about that pen (E). Tell me more about it (A). Look, I respect your stuff and I want to help you find it (R)."

Classroom Safety Note

If a student becomes agitated during this lesson, **do not press them**. Use the techniques you are teaching. Give them space. De-escalation starts with the facilitator. If things get "too real," pivot to the science (biology) or take a 5-minute breather.

"Why does it feel like 'losing' if we don't snap back? How can we change that mindset?"

"Is there a difference between de-escalating a friend and de-escalating an enemy? Which is harder?"

Scenario Facilitation

The Hallway Bump (Slide 6)

This scenario is high-stakes because it involves **audience/peers**. The perceived "smirk" is a direct challenge to status.

The EAR approach: "Whoa, hold up (A). I see you're trying to push my buttons right now (E). I'm not looking for drama today, I'm just trying to get to class (R)."

The Step-Back: Keep walking. Do not look back. Looking back is often the "invitation" for round two.

Success Metrics

Students can name 3 physical warning signs.
Students can verbalize one EAR response.
Students identify the difference between reaction and response.
