Grief Discussion Guide
Teacher Facilitation Resource • Navigating Grief and Loss
This guide is designed to facilitate a safe, respectful, and open conversation about grief. Remind students that participation is voluntary and they should only share what they feel comfortable with.
1
What does grief mean to you?
Facilitation Tips
- Encourage students to think beyond just death—loss of a friendship, a pet, moving to a new city, or losing an opportunity.
- Key Definition: Grief is a natural emotional response to losing someone or something important. It's not a single feeling, but a complex series of emotions.
2
How do people experience grief differently?
Facilitation Tips
- Discuss Cultural Factors: Different cultures have unique mourning traditions, rituals, and ways of expressing sadness.
- Discuss Personal Factors: Personality, past experiences with loss, and coping styles (some are vocal, some are quiet).
- Discuss Situational Factors: Was the loss sudden or expected? How close was the relationship?
3
Why is it important to talk about grief and loss?
Facilitation Tips
- Emphasize that isolation often makes grief harder to process.
- Talking helps normalize the experience—students learn they aren't "weird" for feeling the way they do.
- Discuss the role of empathy: Understanding grief helps us support our friends and family when they are struggling.
Safety & Support
Conversations about loss can be triggering for some students. If you notice a student becoming visibly distressed, offer them a moment to step out or connect with the school counselor. Ensure you have information for local support resources or the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988) available.
