When do we need to bend?
Indoor Recess
It's raining! We can't go to the playground like we planned.
Absent Teacher
Your favorite teacher is out and there is a substitute today.
New Rules
The rules of the game at PE have changed halfway through.
Which brain would handle these better? Spaghetti or Pipe Cleaner?

Cognitive Flexibility Practice
Name:
Date:
Rigid Thinking
Like a piece of dry spaghetti. It doesn't want to move. When a change happens, it might "snap" or get stuck in a bad mood.
Flexible Thinking
Like a rubber band or spring. It can bend and stretch. When a change happens, it finds a new way to solve the problem.
The Sorting Lab
Read each reaction below. Decide if it is Rigid (breaks) or Flexible (bends). Check the correct box.
"Recess is inside because of rain. I'm going to sit in the corner and refuse to play anything else."
Rigid
Flexible
"My favorite pencil broke. That's annoying, but I'll use this other one for now and sharpen mine later."

"We have a substitute teacher. This isn't how we usually do math! I'm not doing the work today."

Lesson 1: Mind Flex Foundations
Learning Objective
Students will define cognitive flexibility and distinguish between rigid (spaghetti) and flexible (pipe cleaner) reactions to change.
Materials Needed
• Dry Spaghetti Noodles
• Pipe Cleaners
• Mind Flex Slides
• Sorting Worksheet
The Hook: The Pressure Test
1. The Rigid Test: Hold up a piece of dry spaghetti. Tell the class this represents a "Rigid Plan." Apply pressure to the middle until it snaps.
Say: "What happened when the plan faced pressure? It broke. It couldn't change."
2. The Flexible Test: Hold up a pipe cleaner. Tell the class this represents a "Flexible Plan." Bend it into a circle or a zig-zag.
Say: "What happened here? It changed shape. It didn't break. It's still useful!"
Discussion Probes
Q1
"Why might someone's brain feel like a piece of dry spaghetti when a surprise happens?"
Q2
"If we are 'flexible' thinkers, does that mean we never get upset? Or does it mean we handle the upset differently?"
Q3
"Think of a time you were flexible. How did that situation end up? Better or worse than if you were rigid?"
SpEd Adaptation Tips
Visual Support
Keep the broken spaghetti and bent pipe cleaner on display as a physical "anchor chart" throughout the unit.
Concrete Language
Avoid abstract terms. Use "Stuck Thinking" vs. "Bending Thinking" consistently to build a common vocabulary.

Discussion Tip for Teachers
When reviewing these with students, point out that the Flex Thought doesn't always have to be "happy." Sometimes it's just neutral or logical . Flexibility isn't about ignoring the problem; it's about looking for a solution or a way to keep going despite the disappointment.

Mastering Your Coping Tools
Why do we need tools?
When we notice a Body Signal, it means our stress level is rising.
If we don't use a Coping Tool, our "spaghetti" brain might snap!
A coping tool is like a fire extinguisher for your emotions.
