Part 1: Intro (5 Min)

Teacher Dialogue

"Hi [Student's Name]! Thanks for being here today. We're going to talk about a really important life skill: advocating for your needs. It's all about making sure your voice is heard."

"To start, what comes to your mind when you hear the phrase, 'speaking up for yourself'? What do you think that means?"

Wait for Response

"Those are great ideas! Today, our objective is to understand what 'advocating for your needs' means, identify situations where you can do it, and practice how to do it effectively."

Transition to Slide 2: What is Advocating?

"So, what is advocating for your needs? It's really about clearly and respectfully communicating what you need or want to others. It's making sure your voice is heard and that your important concerns are addressed, while also respecting others. It's not about being bossy or demanding, but about being clear and confident."

Part 2: Why Advocate? (7 Min)

Transition to Slide 3: Why is it Important?

"Why do you think this skill is so important, especially for someone your age? Why is it good to advocate for yourself?"

Wait for Response

"Exactly! When you advocate, you ensure your ideas and feelings are heard, you get the support you need, it helps solve problems, and it builds your confidence. It's empowering!"

Transition to Slide 4: Where Can You Advocate?

"You can advocate almost anywhere! Let's think about some common places for an 8th grader:"

At School: Need help with a tough math problem. How would you ask for help?
At Home: Need quiet for homework. How could you politely ask for space?
With Friends: A friend wants you to do something you're uncomfortable with. How would you set a boundary?

Part 3: Practice (10 Min)

Transition to Slide 5: Let's Practice!

"Great job thinking through those! Now, it's your turn to practice. I have an activity called Advocacy Practice Activity that we'll work through together. For each scenario, I want you to think about what the need is, who you talk to, what you say, and the outcome."

Teacher Tip

Guide the student through scenarios. Help them refine responses. Encourage "I" statements (e.g., "I feel overwhelmed when... and I need...").

Part 4 & 5: Reflect & Close (8 Min)

"You're doing really well with this! It takes courage, but you're getting the hang of it. Now, for a moment of reflection. I have a My Advocacy Journal prompt for you. I'd like you to think about it and start writing down your thoughts."

Transition to Slide 6: You've Got This!

"Alright, to wrap up our session today, I have a quick Advocacy Cool Down Ticket for you. Just a couple of questions to see what you took away from our discussion."

"Fantastic work today! Remember, advocating for your needs is a powerful skill. Keep practicing, and know that your voice matters!"
