Facilitator Guide

Guiding High Schoolers Toward Facility and Resource Ownership

Core Tone Strategy: Avoid the "Lecture" Trap

At age 16, teenagers respond defensively to moralizing lectures or rules-for-rules'-sake arguments. This lesson frames respect for spaces as a matter of personal control, peer standing, and school culture freedom. If students feel accused, they will disengage. Keep the tone collaborative, clinical, and logical.

00-08 Min

Phase 1: The Tactical Set-Up

Introduce the concept that "Respect is Control." Have students complete Page 1 (Threat Assessment). Prompt a short class debate on why vandalized bathrooms lead directly to locked doors and restricted passes.

08-22 Min

Phase 2: Scenario Exploration

Divide students into pairs. Have them read the four scenarios on Pages 2 and 3. Encourage them to honestly draft the fallout and outcomes. Highlight the concept of maintaining a standard of personal control.

22-35 Min

Phase 3: Ripple Effects & Staff Perspectives

Go through Page 4 and Page 5. Review the $1,200 Restroom Vandalism cost projection and read the custodian/IT coordinator interviews. Connect damaged resources with fewer cool school events/gear.

35-50 Min

Phase 4: Conflict Resolution & Playbook

Have students work through Page 6 (Restorative Planner) and Page 7 (Tactical Playbook). Review how walking away or keeping peers accountable is a leadership move. Sign off on workbooks.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Identify the direct, non-financial school policy consequences of facility vandalism.
Analyze multi-step consequences (financial, labor, social) of resource neglect.
Formulate non-confrontational scripts to resist peer pressure in vandalistic situations.

Workbook Page 1: Threat Assessment

INTRO

Allow students to be blunt here. If they say the bathrooms are "trashed," do not defend the school. Ask: "Why do you think it got this way? Is it because the school doesn't care, or because some students are actively breaking things?" Use this to establish that students themselves have the power to break or protect the space.

GUIDING SCRIPT:

"If you walk into a clean gym, you play hard. If you walk into a gym with trash everywhere, you throw your plastic bottle on the floor. The environment dictates how we act. Who should control that environment? Us, or the people trashing it?"

BATHROOM & COMMONS

In pairs, let students map out the decision paths.

Scenario 1 (Restroom): Prompt them to identify the immediate fallout. (e.g., getting caught on camera, suspended, losing cell phone privilege, parents called, bathroom locked). Discuss why declining doesn't mean being "soft."
Scenario 2 (Cafeteria): Target the "custodians are paid to do this" myth. Point out that custodians are local neighborhood members or family-like figures. This is a matter of basic class and status—high-character people don't make others clean their personal mess.

TECH & LOCKER ROOM

Focus on collective damage and student access.

Scenario 3 (Chromebook Keys): Ask: "Who sits at that keyboard next class?" Help them see that physical key peeling ruins another kid's chance to finish work or do well on a test. It's a direct micro-aggression against a classmate.
Scenario 4 (Locker Kick): Explain that when locker-rooms get dented up, the school has to locks rooms up, meaning students must carry heavy gym bags all day. The convenience of all students is wiped out for a 2-second "boom."

MAPPING

This page forces students to analyze unseen consequences. Make sure they complete the four ripples.

The Vibe Ripple: When spaces look trashed, school begins to feel like a holding center or a jail, which raises anxiety and dampens mood.

The Cash Drain: Demonstrate that fixing things is an alternative cost. Every $50 handle replaced is $50 less for sports equipment or class trips.

EMPATHY & LABOR

Read the statements of Mr. Henderson and Ms. Torres aloud. Ask for a volunteer to read them with real emotion.

Point out that custodians are not distant robots—they are valuable community members. Ask: "What is the physical toll of scrubbing graffiti or removing food from ceilings on a hot afternoon?" Guide them to understand that avoiding vandalism is a matter of human kindness and professional respect.

RECONCILIATION

The hypothetical paint spill exercise is crucial. Encourage them to be radically honest.

Ensure they do not use passive language (e.g., "The paint spilled" vs. "We ran and knocked it over").
Discuss the strategic value of taking ownership before getting caught. Confessing and offering to clean up reduces penalties by 80% and gains immediate respect.

Overcoming Skepticism & Circle-up

OBJECTIONS & CIRCLES

Tactical Defense: Overcoming Resistance

Objection: "It's not my job to watch other people."

Redirect: "Correct, you aren't security. But if someone stole your backpack, you'd want someone to speak up. Protecting common property keeps your own stuff safe."

Objection: "It's just a joke, it's not that deep."

Redirect: "A joke is funny for everyone. If a student can't wash their hands because the soap dispenser is ripped off, the joke failed. It's just annoying."

Restorative Circle Protocol (10 Min)

Gather students in a circle for the final wrap-up to secure commitments. Pass around an object (like a whiteboard marker or a small tool) to regulate speaking.

PROMPT 1: "What is one rule or restriction at our school that you hate, and how did student behavior or resource misuse contribute to that rule being created?"

PROMPT 2: "How can we change the culture so that destroying stuff or making massive messes is seen as 'clown behavior' rather than 'cool behavior'?"

Final Workbook Certification & Sign-off

Review Page 7 of their workbooks. Do not accept blank or half-hearted scripts (e.g. "I'll just say no"). Look for specific, actionable excuses that save face:

Acceptable Script: "I'm good, trying to stay on the coach's good side this week."
Acceptable Script: "No thanks, I don't feel like sitting in ISS on Friday."
Acceptable Action: Pulling a friend away saying, "Let's go grab a drink before the bell, we're late."
