Target Skill
Complete Sentence Responses
Target Audience
Middle School (Grades 6-8)
Duration
45 - 60 Minutes
Key Scenarios
Joining, Disagreement, Peers, Food.
Learning Objectives
- Identify differences between fragments and complete sentence responses.
- Apply the Hook, Frame, and Tail formula to construct social scripts.
- Demonstrate fluency in four scenarios: Joining Groups, Disagreements, Peers, and Ordering.
Materials Needed
12 Role-Play Task Cards
Conversation Blueprint Organizer
Studio Practice Worksheet
Pencils & Highlighters
1. The "Cold Open" (10m)
Ask: "What's a movie you liked?" Compare "Batman" vs "I really enjoyed the new Batman movie because the action scenes were incredible." Discuss how full sentences make the listener feel more engaged.
2. Direct Instruction: The Blueprint (10m)
Use the Conversation Blueprint. Explain the formula: Hook (acknowledge), Frame (reuse question words), and Tail (add a detail/question). Model one "Disagreement" scenario aloud using the formula.
3. Studio Session (Role-Play) (20m)
Pairs take Task Cards. Student A is the "Director" (reads prompt); Student B is the "Lead" (responds). They must use the formula. Encourage the "Director" to give feedback: "Was there a Tail?" or "Did you reuse the question words?"
4. Post-Production (10m)
Students complete the Studio Practice Worksheet to lock in the written structure. Review one answer from each of the four categories together.
Wrap-Up Challenge
Exit Ticket: Students must say one complete sentence response to a "Joining a Group" scenario before leaving class.
