Instructional Steps

Warm-Up: What Are Our Ears For?

Gather students in a circle. Ask them, "What do we use our ears for?" (Listening!)
Introduce the idea that listening is more than just hearing sounds; it's about understanding.
Explain that today, we're going on an "Active Listening Adventure" to become super listeners.

Story Time: The Listening Bear

10 MIN

Present the Listening Ears Slide Deck.
Read a short story where a character demonstrates good or bad listening.
Pause the story at key moments to ask: "Was Bear listening? How do you know?"
Use the slide deck to highlight key active listening behaviors: eyes watching, quiet mouth, brains thinking.

Activity: Listen Up!

10 MIN

Distribute Listen Up Activity Cards to small groups or pairs.
Give simple verbal instructions for students to follow (e.g., "Put the red square next to the blue circle.").
Observe and gently guide students to practice active listening behaviors.
After each instruction, ask: "Did you listen carefully? What did you do with your eyes? Your mouth? Your brain?"

Cool Down: What Did You Hear?

Hand out the What Did You Hear? Worksheet.
Ask students to draw or circle something they remember hearing or learning about active listening.
Discuss responses as a class, reinforcing the importance of active listening in school and at home.
