A New Story
"Joy is like a warm light inside of you."
It’s different from just having "fun." Joy is that happy, peaceful, or proud feeling we get from doing things we truly care about.
Short-term Fun
Watching a cartoon or eating a piece of candy.
Long-term Joy
Playing with a best friend or learning to ride a bike.
Where do you feel it?
When you feel really happy, what does your body do?
• Does your chest feel warm?
• Do your feet want to wiggle?
• Does your face feel like it's glowing?

3-4 Mystery Objects
1
The Mystery Hook (10 mins)
Present the Mystery Objects one by one. Ask students to give a silent "thumbs up" if they think that item could make someone feel happy.
Discussion Prompt: "Why did some of us give a thumbs up for the paintbrush, but others didn't? Does joy look the same for everyone?"
2
Defining the Spark (15 mins)
Use the slides to distinguish between "Fun" (short-term, quick burst) and "Joy" (sustained, meaningful).
Fun: A joke, a piece of candy, a quick game.
Joy: Helping a friend, finishing a project, feeling safe and loved.
3
Mapping Sensations (15 mins)
Distribute the Joy Map Worksheet . Guide students through a mini-visualization: "Close your eyes. Think of a 'Joy Spark' moment. Where do you feel the warmth? Is it a glow in your chest? Is it wiggly toes? Is it a light head?"
4
The Joy Gallery (5 mins)
Students share their reflection sentences with a partner. Collect maps to observe the diversity of emotional physicalization.
Teacher Tips
"Some students may struggle to name a physical sensation. Encourage them to use colors if words are hard. If a student says they 'don't feel joy,' ask them to think of a time they felt 'proud' or 'satisfied' instead."

Goal
Identify Preferences
1
Four Corners Hook (15 mins)
Clear some space in the room. Label the four corners (use the slide categories). Call out activities or use the slide deck to prompt movement.
Observation: Encourage students to look around and see that their peers might choose different corners. This builds the concept that "Joy is unique."
2
The Joy Sorting Activity (20 mins)
Hand out The Great Joy Sort worksheet. Students will circle or color the heart, smile, or "meh" face for each item.
Encourage them to work independently first to ensure their answers reflect their true feelings, not their neighbor's.
3
Preference Discussion (10 mins)
Have students find a "Preference Partner" (someone who chose the same corner for at least one activity).
What was your #1 "Love It" activity?
Was there something you both disagreed on?
The "Never Tried It" Option
"Some students might feel nervous to choose 'Not for me.' Remind them that it's okay to not like something! If they haven't tried an activity, encourage them to put a question mark or leave it blank until they can try it."

7 Mins / Station
Station 1:
Creative
The Task: Free Drawing
Students use provided materials to draw a "Happy Place" or anything that makes them feel creative. Focus is on flow and self-expression rather than the final product.
Station 2:
Active
The Task: Movement burst
Set a timer for 1-minute bursts of jumping jacks, running in place, or a "dance break." Encourage them to feel their heart beating faster!
Station 3:
Relaxing
The Task: Slow Breathing
Use "Box Breathing" (In for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4). Have students sit or lay down and close their eyes if they feel comfortable.
Post-Lab Debrief
"Which station moved your energy battery the most? Did any station make you feel calmer but also happier?"
Caution
Remind students that 'High Energy' isn't always 'Better.' Sometimes we need the 'Relaxing' station to feel a peaceful kind of joy.

"When we go to a restaurant, we look at a menu to choose what we want to eat. What if we had a menu for our emotions?"
