Skill: Identifying Problems & "I" Messages
WEEK 2
Mission Objective
Students will learn to distinguish between a "problem" (something that needs a solution) and a "no-problem" (life happening), and practice stating the problem using a respectful "I" Message.
Gear Needed
Week 2 Slides
Sorter (2-Sided)
5m Warm-Up
Warmup: The Detective Salute
Do: Use Slide 3. Describe scenarios. Students Salute for a "Helpful Hero" and use a Detective Chin pose for a "Problem."
Say: "Superstars look for clues! If I say a Hero move, Salute! If it's a Problem, Detective Chin! 'Someone shares a toy' (Salute). 'Someone won't let you play' (Chin)."
10m Teach
Direct Instruction: Step 1 (Say It!)
Teach: Focus on Slide 5 . The "Blame Way" (You did it!) vs the "Superstar Way" (I feel... because...).
Key Note: 1st graders often confuse a "feeling" with a "thought." Redirect from "I feel like you're mean" to "I feel sad."
Say: "Detectives don't point fingers! We use our 'I' Voice. It helps our friends hear us better. Instead of 'You stole my toy!', try: 'I feel frustrated because I can't find my toy.'"
10m Work
Activity: Problem Detective Work
Guide: Do Page 1 together (The Scenario Sort). Turn it over. Have students draw a problem they had recently and whisper their "I feel... because..." to a partner.
Say: "In your drawing box, show me a problem you solved or a problem you have right now. Then, look at the bottom and practice your 'I Message' clues!"
π‘
Counselor Pro-Tip: The "Because" Anchor
The "Because" part is the hardest. Encourage them to focus on The Object or The Action (Because I wanted the ball) rather than the person (Because he is mean). This keeps the focus on the problem, not the player!
Week 4 Facilitator Guide Aligned Solution Superstars Unit
Week 4: Heart Menders
Skill: Making Amends & Apologies
WEEK 4
Mission Objective
Learn that apologies aren't just a word, but a 4-part act to "mend" a broken friendship heart.
Gear Needed
Week 4 Slides
Apology Puzzle
5m Warm-Up
Warmup: Heart Hands
Do: Students make a "Heart" with hands. Explain that hurt feelings "break" the heart. Pull hands apart to show the break.
Say: "Make a heart! Now pretend it's broken. Superstars are Heart Menders. We use our words to put the heart back together!"
10m Teach
Direct Instruction: The 4 Pieces
Teach: Use Slide 5 . Apologies need: 1. I'm sorry for... 2. It was wrong because... 3. Next time... 4. How can I help?
Say: "Just saying 'sorry' is like a tiny band-aid. We need all 4 pieces to mend the heart! The most important piece is asking 'How can I help?'"
10m Work
Activity: Apology Puzzle
Guide: Pass out the worksheet. Students color the 4 pieces and draw themselves helping a friend feel better.
Say: "Color the puzzle pieces that help us mend a heart. Then, draw yourself being a great Heart Mender in the big box!"
π‘
Counselor Pro-Tip: Fixing the Damage
Focus on Step 4. Examples for kids: Helping pick up spilled blocks, giving a high-five, or letting the other person go first. Action follows words!

Do: Use Slide 3 . Teach moves: S (Searching), T (Thinking), E (Weighing), P (Hero stance).

I DO: The Swing Problem
Teach: Use Slides 4-6 . Explain Safe/Fair compass. Model thinking through the Swing scenario.
"If I want the swing, I could push my friend off. Is that safe? (No). Is it fair? (No). I'll explore a better way: I'll wait my turn or ask for 5 more minutes. That is safe AND fair!"
7m Practice
WE DO: The Ball Battle
Guide: Use Slide 7 . Ask the class to help you explore Path A (Grab) and Path B (Play Together) using the compass.
"Two friends, one ball. Is Path A (grabbing) safe? No. Is Path B (playing together) fair? Yes! Let's pick the Scout Path together."
10m Work
YOU DO: Pick a Path Sheet
Apply: Pass out the worksheet. Students solve the Puzzle Challenge independently.
"Now it's your turn, Scouts! Look at the Puzzle Challenge. Circle the path that is Safe and Fair for both friends, then draw yourself using that solution!"
π‘
Counselor Pro-Tip: The 'Pause'
Remind students that 'Exploring' (Step E) takes time. It's okay to stop and think before picking. A Solution Scout never rushes to pick a path that hurts someone!

Say: "Look at the first one: a spilled juice! Which superstar tool do we need for that? Draw a line to the Accident Expert!"
!
Facilitator Note: Multiple Poses
Some students may notice that a problem can have multiple tools (e.g., spilling juice needs an Expert AND a Mender). Praise this critical thinking! Tell them they can draw two lines if they find a "Mega Solution."
