Lesson Objective
Students will demonstrate fluency with multiplication facts up to 10 by matching expressions with their correct products in a collaborative "Memory" style game.
Materials Needed
Jungle Match Cards (1 set per pair/group)
Hunter's Log Recording Sheet (1 per student)
Scissors (if cards aren't pre-cut)
Ziploc bags or envelopes for card storage

Expedition Instructions

Preparation
Print the Jungle Match Cards on cardstock if possible for durability. You can print them double-sided with the pattern on the back to prevent "peeking." Cut cards ahead of time or have students do it as a warm-up.

Introduction
Use the Jungle Safari Slides to review multiplication strategies (arrays, equal groups). Explain that they are "Multiplication Explorers" searching the jungle for matching pairs.

Gameplay
Students shuffle cards and lay them face down. Players take turns flipping two cards. If they match (expression + product), they keep the pair and record it on their Hunter's Log.

Reflection
After the game, have students share which facts were the "wildest" (hardest to remember) and what strategies they used to solve them (e.g., "I used my 5s to solve 6x5").
Scaffolding & Extension
For Extra Support:
Limit the deck to facts 1-5 only.
Allow students to use multiplication charts or manipulatives.
Play face-up as a simple matching activity instead of Memory.
For a Challenge:
Set a "Speed Run" timer for the whole deck.
Have students create their own "Wild Card" facts (e.g., 11s and 12s).
Require students to draw an array for every match they find.

Hide the Cards
Mix up all the cards and lay them face down in neat rows.
Take Turns
Flip over TWO cards. If they match an equation to its answer, you keep them!

Record Your Catch
When you find a match, write it down on your Hunter's Log!
No Match?
Flip them back over in the exact same spot. Try to remember where they are!

Print and cut the Specimen Scavenger Cards. One set per pair is recommended.
Provide each pair with a physical ruler marked with quarter inches.
Laminate the Plot Duel Board if you want students to use dry-erase markers for the 'X' marks.
Game Rules: The Duel
Objective: Collaborate to build the line plot and be the first to complete the "Data Missions."
Students take turns drawing a card and measuring.
Explorer 1 measures and Explorer 2 checks their measurement.
Explorer 1 adds an 'X' to the board.
Repeat until all cards (or a set amount) are plotted.
The students race to finish the Data Missions independently.

Common Misconceptions
Starting at 1
Watch for students who align the object at the edge of the ruler instead of the "0" mark.
Misreading Tick Marks
Students often confuse the \( \frac{1}{4} \) and \( \frac{3}{4} \) marks. Encourage them to count the 4 small gaps within one inch.
CCSS.MATH.3.MD.B.4: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot.
