Recognizing Patterns
1
The Foundation: Adding Without Regrouping
Start with the Ones
Problem: 324 + 153
H T O
324
477
Step 1: Add the Ones 4 + 3 = 7 ones
7 is less than 10. No grouping needed! Place 7 in the ones column.
Step 2: Add the Tens 2 + 5 = 7 tens
7 tens equals 70. Write 7 directly in the tens column.
Step 3: Add the Hundreds 3 + 1 = 4 hundreds
4 hundreds equals 400. Total Sum is 477.
Golden Rule: When the sum in any place value is 9 or less, just write it down and move left!
!
The Magic Rule of 10
Why We Regroup
Rule #1: Bundling Ones 10 Ones → 1 Ten
10
Only one digit (0–9) fits in any place value. When ones reach 10 or more, bundle 10 ones into 1 Ten!
Rule #2: Bundling Tens 10 Tens → 1 Hundred
100
When the tens column reaches 10 or more tens (100+), bundle 10 tens into 1 Hundred and carry it over!
Pro Tip: “Bundle 10, carry 1 to the next neighbor on the left!”
2
Strategy A: Regrouping Ones into Tens
Example: 358 + 216
1
358
574
1. Add Ones: 8 + 6 = 14 Regroup Needed!
14 ones = 1 ten and 4 ones. Keep the 4 in the ones place, send the 1 ten to the top of the tens column!
2. Add Tens: 1 (carried) + 5 + 1 = 7 tens
Remember to add the new ten! 1 + 5 + 1 = 7 tens. 7 is single-digit, so write 7.
3. Add Hundreds: 3 + 2 = 5 hundreds
3 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 5 hundreds. The final sum is 574.
Don't forget your visitor: Always add the carried “1” first so it isn't missed!
3
Strategy B: Regrouping Tens into Hundreds
Example: 482 + 371
1
482
853
1. Add Ones: 2 + 1 = 3 ones
3 is single-digit. No regrouping needed in the ones place!
2. Add Tens: 8 + 7 = 15 tens Regroup Needed!
15 tens = 1 hundred and 5 tens. Keep 5 in tens, carry 1 hundred to the hundreds place!
3. Add Hundreds: 1 (carried) + 4 + 3 = 8 hundreds
1 carried + 4 + 3 = 8 hundreds. The final answer is 853.
Notice the pattern: Regrouping works exactly the same whether you bundle ones or tens!
4
Boss Level: Double Regrouping
Example: 468 + 275
1 1
468
743
Step 1: Ones (8 + 5 = 13)
13 ones = 1 ten & 3 ones. Write 3 in ones, carry 1 ten over.
Step 2: Tens (1 + 6 + 7 = 14)
14 tens = 1 hundred & 4 tens. Write 4 in tens, carry 1 hundred over.
Step 3: Hundreds (1 + 4 + 2 = 7)
Write 7 in hundreds column. Total sum = 743.
You did it! Even with multiple regroupings, the step-by-step method never fails!

Number Detective: Will It Regroup?
Spot the Sign
Before calculating, look at each place value. Ask: “Does this column add up to 10 or more?”
Case #1
243 + 315
No Regrouping Needed
3+5 = 8 (ones < 10)
4+1 = 5 (tens < 10)
Case #2
429 + 137
Regroup Ones Only
9+7 = 16 (ones ≥ 10!)
1+2+3 = 6 (tens < 10)
Case #3
586 + 278
Double Regrouping
6+8 = 14 (bundle ones!)
1+8+7 = 16 (bundle tens!)

Diagnostic Intervention Guide
Omitted Carry: Student adds $7+8=15$ but writes $5$ without adding $1$ to the tens column (e.g., getting $575$ instead of $585$). Have them circle the regrouping box first.
Digit Crowding: Student writes $15$ entirely in the ones place (resulting in $5715$). Remind students: “Only one digit fits per room!”
Unnecessary Regrouping: Student carries a $1$ even when the sum is $\le 9$ (e.g., in Problem 1). Emphasize checking: “Is it 10 or more? If not, no carrying!”
