The Golden Rule of Base Ten
Concept Discovery
The Ones Room
Maximum capacity: 9
The ones place can only fit single digits (0 through 9). As soon as you collect 10 ones, it is too crowded!
TRADE!
The Tens Tower
1 Ten Rod
Snap 10 individual ones together into 1 solid Ten Rod and march it over to the Tens column!
Key Rule: 10 Ones = 1 Ten. When ones total 10 or more, trade!
Model
Seeing It with Blocks: 28 + 15
28 + 15 = ?
Step 1: Build Numbers
Set out the Tens and Ones for both numbers:
28:
2 Tens + 8 Ones
15:
1 Ten + 5 Ones
Start by looking at the ones cubes first!
Step 2: Combine Ones
8 ones + 5 ones = 13 ones
13 is too big for ones!
Take 10 ones • trade for 1 Ten
Leaves 3 ones behind!
13 ones = 1 Ten + 3 Ones
Step 3: Count Total
Count all the tens, then the ones left:
Old Tens: 2 + 1 = 3
+ Traded Ten: + 1
Total Tens: 4 Tens (40)
4 Tens + 3 Ones = 43
Visualizing with blocks makes the math clear before writing the numbers!

Add the Ones First
8 + 5 = 13. 13 has 3 ones and 1 ten.
→ Write 3 in the ones spot. Carry the 1 ten to the top!
2
Add All Tens Together
Don't forget the carried ten on top! Add: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4.
→ Write 4 in the tens column. Final answer: 43!
Always ask yourself: "Did my ones make 10 or more?" If yes, regroup! If no, just add down.
Worked Example
Let's Solve Together: 47 + 36
Practice Together
Phase A • Ones Step 1
Add 7 + 6
7 ones plus 6 ones equals 13 ones.
Carried Ten

→
Ones Column
3
Action: Put 3 below the line, put 1 in the tens box above 4.
Phase B • Tens Step 2
Add 1 + 4 + 3
Add the 1 carried ten plus 4 tens plus 3 tens:
1 + 4 + 3 = 8
Write 8 in the tens spot!
Result: 47 + 36 = 83
Great mathematicians always double check: 40 + 30 = 70, and 7 + 6 = 13. Then 70 + 13 = 83!

Q1
Check the Ones:
What is 6 + 8? Will we need to regroup into a Ten?
Q2
Trade the Ten:
Which number stays in the ones column, and which number gets carried?
Q3
Finish the Tens:
What is the final sum when you add 1 + 5 + 2?
Ready to check your thinking?
6 + 8 = 14 • Final Sum: 84
