Anchor Problem: Step-by-Step Model
Study Before Practicing
Example Problem
“At a birthday party, the girls ate \(\frac{1}{5}\) of the pizzas and the boys ate \(\frac{4}{15}\) of the pizzas. How many pizzas were eaten in all?”
1 Understand & Plan
- “In all” means addition.
- Fractions: \(\frac{1}{5}\) and \(\frac{4}{15}\).
- Goal: Compute \(\frac{1}{5} + \frac{4}{15}\).
2 Find Common Denominator
Denominators 5 and 15 have LCM = 15.
\(\frac{1}{5} \times \frac{3}{3} = \frac{3}{15}\) | \(\frac{4}{15}\) stays \(\frac{4}{15}\)
3 Add Like Slices
Add numerators; keep denominator:
\(\frac{3}{15} + \frac{4}{15} = \frac{3 + 4}{15} = \frac{7}{15}\)
4 Simplify & Sentence
Simplified? Yes (GCD is 1).
Answer: “In all, \(\frac{7}{15}\) pizzas were eaten.”

Girls: \(\frac{1}{5} = \frac{3}{15}\)
Boys: \(\frac{4}{15}\)
Remaining: \(\frac{8}{15}\)
Common Fraction Mistake to Avoid: Never add denominators! \(\frac{1}{5} + \frac{4}{15} \neq \frac{5}{20}\). Slices must be cut into identical equal parts before combining numerators!

1 Fruit Punch Refill
Total Consumption
Marcus brought a bottle of fruit punch to the celebration. During the first hour, guests drank \(\frac{3}{8}\) of the bottle. During the second hour, guests drank another \(\frac{5}{12}\) of the bottle. What fraction of the bottle was consumed in all?

Remaining Amount
Elena started the party with \(\frac{9}{10}\) of a custom sheet cake. By the end of the afternoon, guests had eaten \(\frac{2}{5}\) of the cake. What fraction of the original sheet cake is left? (Simplify your answer!)

3 Challenge: Giant Sub Sandwiches
Multi-Step
The party host ordered 2 whole submarine sandwiches. Table 1 ate \(\frac{2}{3}\) of a sub, and Table 2 ate \(\frac{5}{6}\) of a sub. How many sandwiches were eaten altogether, and how much is leftover from the 2 subs?
Part A: Total Eaten (\(\frac{2}{3} + \frac{5}{6}\)):
Part B: Leftover from 2 Wholes (\(2 - \text{Total}\)):
