Clue 1: Parts of Speech Slide 2 of 6
Is It an Adjective or a Verb?
Think of math symbols like words in a sentence.
NEGATIVE SIGN An "Adjective"
Tells WHO the number is.
It describes the value's state or position relative to zero on the number line.
Example: \( -7 \)
Read as: "negative seven"
Not doing math yet—just describing the value!
Answers: "Where are you on the line?"
MINUS SIGN A "Verb"
Tells WHAT to DO.
It represents an action or operation taking place between two values.
Example: \( 10 - 4 \)
Read as: "ten minus four"
An action is happening: subtracting 4!
Answers: "What operation are we performing?"
Golden Rule: A negative is a STATE. A minus is an ACTION. Never mix their jobs!
Clue 2: The Keypad Mystery Slide 3 of 6
Why Calculators Shout "SYNTAX ERROR"
Scientific calculators have two separate physical buttons for a reason!
(-)
The Negation Key
Attaches directly to a single number to make it negative.
Used for:
(-) 8 → \(-8\)
Cannot subtract two numbers by itself!
−
The Subtraction Key
Requires two numbers to sit between. It operates on both.
Used for:
12 − 5 → \(12 - 5\)
Pressing this first can cause a Syntax Error!
The Common Trap: Entering \( 5 - - 3 \)
Typing two subtraction keys [−] [−] triggers a Syntax Error because the calculator expects a number after the first minus! You must type [−] [(-)] 3.
Clue 3: The 2-Question Test Slide 4 of 6
How to Decode Any Sign in 3 Seconds
Look at the symbol right before the dash to know instantly.
1 Is it at the very START or after an operator?
It is a NEGATIVE sign (State)!
-4 + 9 Start of line → negative 4
6 + (-2) Inside parenthesis → negative 2
8 × (-3) Attached to 3 → negative 3
2 Is it right BETWEEN two quantities?
It is a MINUS sign (Action)!
15 - 7 Between 15 and 7 → 15 minus 7
-9 - 3 Between (-9) and 3 → minus 3
5 - (-4) Between 5 and (-4) → 5 minus
Test trick: Cover the dash with your finger. If it leaves two complete expressions on either side, it's a minus!
Case Files: Full Forensic Breakdown Slide 5 of 6
Labeling Every Single Dash
Look closely at how each dash performs a distinct job.
Case #1:
- 5 - 8
1st Dash: Negative Sign (Identity of the number 5)
2nd Dash: Minus Sign (Operation between -5 and 8)
Say aloud: "Negative five minus eight"
Case #2:
12 - (- 4)
1st Dash: Minus Sign (The subtraction action)
2nd Dash: Negative Sign (Identity of the 4)
Say aloud: "Twelve minus negative four" (equals \(12 + 4 = 16\))
Case #3:
- (- 10)
1st Dash: "Opposite of" (Negation operator)
2nd Dash: Negative Sign (Identity of the 10)
Say aloud: "The opposite of negative ten" (which is \(+10\))
Speaking accurately prevents computational mistakes. Say "negative" for the number, "minus" for the action!
Detective Challenge: Check Your Instincts Slide 6 of 6
Can You Spot Every Sign?
Analyze this master expression with your partner:
Target Expression
- 14 - (- 6) - 9
How Many Negative Signs?
2 Negative Signs
On the -14 and inside the parenthesis (-6).
How Many Minus Signs?
2 Minus Signs
Subtracting (-6) and subtracting 9.

Forensic Math Lab • Negative Signs (State) vs. Minus Signs (Action)
Name:
Date:
Period:
Negative Sign (State / Adjective)
Tells who the number is (location on number line). Attached to one single number, at the start of a term, or inside parentheses.
-7 → "negative seven"
Minus Sign (Action / Verb)
Tells what operation to perform. Sits between two quantities and commands subtraction (taking away or adding the opposite).
10 - 4 → "ten minus four"

TOTAL SCORE: / 25 PTS
Mastery Standard: 85%+
Pedagogical Checkpoint: Listen actively as students read problems aloud. If a student says "minus four minus eleven" for \(-4 - 11\), pause and redirect immediately to "negative four minus eleven." Breaking this habit early prevents algebraic errors with distribution later.

Instructional Protocols • Verbal Coaching • Lesson Facilitation
DURATION: 40-45 MIN
Grades 6–9 Pre-Algebra / Algebra 1
Objective 1
Distinguish between unary negation (state/identity) and binary subtraction (action/operation).
Objective 2
Enforce precise verbal reading habits ("negative five minus eight" instead of "minus five minus eight").
Objective 3
Eliminate calculator syntax errors by distinguishing between the [(-)] and [-] keys.

Recommended Lesson Pacing (45 Minutes)
00–05 min Hook & Curiosity Project Slide 1–2. Write "- - 5" on board. Ask: "Can two verbs stand together without a noun?"
05–20 min Slide Instruction Deliver Slides 2–5. Teach the Parts of Speech Analogy (Adjective vs. Verb) & Calculator Key demo.
20–35 min Guided Dossier Students complete Worksheet Page 1 & 2 in pairs. Teacher circulates listening for verbal read-alouds.
35–45 min Debrief & Exit Review the Calculator Crime Scene (Slide 6 check). Collect Part 6 debrief as exit ticket.
The Finger Cover-Up Trick
Have students physically place their index finger over any dash:
- If covering it leaves a complete number on both sides, it is a minus sign (subtraction action).
- If covering it leaves empty space or another symbol on the left, it is a negative sign (part of that number).
Classroom Language Protocol
✗ Banned: "Minus minus five"
✓ Enforced: "Minus negative five" or "The opposite of negative five"
Saying "minus minus" convinces students that minus signs can multiply together, leading to catastrophic sign errors in distribution!
Diagnostic Spot-Checks & Interventions
Symptom: Student thinks \(-x\) is always a negative number.
Cure: Teach that the negative sign means "the opposite of". If \(x = -4\), then \(-x = -(-4) = +4\).
Symptom: Student punches `[-]` instead of `[(-)]` on calculators.
Cure: Have them look at the button row: `[-]` is with `[+]`, `[×]`, `[÷]` (the 4 operations). `[(-)]` sits alone down with digits!
