× 5 = 35

Skip count by 5:

5, 10, 15, 20...

3 × = 21

Skip count by 3:

3, 6, 9, 12, 15...

× 6 = 18

Skip count by 6:

6, 12, 18...

Day 8: Array Splitting & Review Challenge Checkpoint 2 Prep

Break a large array into two friendly chunks: 7 × 3

Chunk A: 5 × 3 =

Chunk B: 2 × 3 =

Add the two chunks together:

+ =

So, 7 × 3 =

Student Workbook Phase 3: Days 9–12

AZ Standards: 3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.D.8

One-Step & Two-Step Word Problems

Name:

Date:

R - Read: Circle numbers, underline target question.

D - Draw: Make equal groups or a tape diagram.

W - Write: Write equation and label final answer.

Day 9: One-Step Equal Groups Story (3.OA.A.3)

Leo puts 6 crayons into each of 4 supply boxes for his math team. How many crayons does Leo pack in all?

Draw Equal Groups / Tape Diagram:

Equation:

× =

Leo packs crayons in all.

Day 10: Array Context Story (3.OA.A.3)

The school gym has 5 rows of chairs with 7 chairs in each row. How many chairs are in the gym?

Draw Rectangular Array:

Equation:

× =

There are chairs in the gym.

Day 11: Two-Step Word Problem with Addition (3.OA.D.8)

Amira bought 3 packs of Arizona cactus stickers. Each pack had 6 stickers. Her teacher gave her 5 more stickers. How many stickers does Amira have now?

Step 1: Multiply to find pack total

× = stickers

Step 2: Add extra stickers

+ 5 = total

Answer: Amira has stickers in all.

Day 12: Two-Step Word Problem with Subtraction (3.OA.D.8)

Carlos baked 4 pans of muffins with 5 muffins on each pan. His family ate 7 muffins for breakfast. How many muffins are left?

Step 1: Multiply total baked muffins

× = baked

Step 2: Subtract eaten muffins

- 7 = left

Answer: Carlos has muffins left.

Checkpoint Probes Key & Scoring Rubric

CHECKPOINT 1 KEY: Equal Groups (3.OA.A.1) • 4 Total Points Mastery: 3/4 or 4/4

Item 1 (1 pt): 3 groups of 4 dots. (Accept: 3 and 4).

Scoring: 1 pt if both blanks correct. 0 pts if reversed.

Item 2 (1 pt): 6 × 5 = 30.

Scoring: Also accept 5 × 6 = 30 by commutative property.

Item 3 (1 pt): 4 groups drawn with 2 in each; total product = 8.

Scoring: 0.5 pt for accurate drawing, 0.5 pt for total product.

Item 4 (1 pt): Jumps shown: 0→3→6→9→12. Land on 12.

Scoring: 1 pt for landing on 12 with visible skips.

CHECKPOINT 2 KEY: Arrays & Unknown Factors (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.4) • 4 Total Points Mastery: 3/4 or 4/4

Item 1 (1 pt): Array equation: 3 × 4 = 12.

Scoring: Accept 4 × 3 = 12 if student counted columns first.

Item 2 (1 pt): Turnaround fact: 6 × 4 = 24.

Scoring: 1 pt for writing factors in reversed order with 24.

Item 3 (1 pt): 3 × [ ? ] = 27 → Unknown factor = 9.

Scoring: 1 pt for 9. Common error: writing 24 (subtracting 3).

Item 4 (1 pt): [ ? ] × 5 = 40 → Unknown factor = 8.

Scoring: 1 pt for 8. Common error: writing 35 (subtracting 5).

CHECKPOINT 3 KEY: Word Problems (3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.D.8) • 3 Total Points Mastery: 3/3 (100%) or 2/3 (67%)

Problem 1 (Saguaro Plants): Equation: 6 × 4 = 24 (or \(4 \times 6\)) • Final: 24 cactus plants.

1 pt (0.5 equation, 0.5 label)

Problem 2 (Phoenix Mosaic): Equation: 3 × 8 = 24 (or \(8 \times 3\)) • Final: 24 turquoise stones.

1 pt (0.5 equation, 0.5 label)

Problem 3 (Mateo's Oranges): Step 1: 5 × 6 = 30 • Step 2: 30 - 8 = 22 • Final: 22 oranges.

1 pt (0.5 steps, 0.5 final answer)

Post-Intervention MTSS Placement Guidelines

Ready for Tier 1:

Student scores ≥80% across Checkpoints 1, 2, and 3. Can transfer representations to abstract core math classwork.

Targeted Maintenance:

Student scores ≥80% on Checkpoints 1 and 2, but 1/3 on Checkpoint 3. Provide 2 extra sessions on two-step word problems (RDW routine).

Intensive Tier 3:

Student continues to confuse addition with multiplication or cannot construct equal groups. Schedule 1:1 diagnostic numeracy screening.
