Equal Groups Slides Lesson 1 • Equal Groups Math Detective Studio
Spotting Equal Groups
Before we can multiply, we have to look for a special math secret: every group must have the exact same amount!
1
Count the Groups
2
Check Group Size
3
Add Them Up!
Case File 01
Which Picture Has Equal Groups?
Picture A Not Equal!
Look inside each nest:
🥚🥚
2 eggs
🥚🥚🥚
3 eggs
🥚
1 egg
⚠️ Groups have different amounts. We cannot use repeated addition!
Picture B Equal Groups!
Look inside each nest:
🥚🥚🥚
3 eggs
🥚🥚🥚
3 eggs
🥚🥚🥚
3 eggs
✨ Every group has 3 eggs. We can add 3 + 3 + 3!
Rule: Multiplication is only for groups that are 100% equal.

3 groups of 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
💡 Notice: The number 4 repeats 3 times . Repeated Addition = Adding the same number again and again.

Aquarium Tanks:
🐠🐠
Tank 1: 2 fish
🐠🐠
Tank 2: 2 fish
🐠🐠
Tank 3: 2 fish
🐠🐠
Tank 4: 2 fish
Step 1: How many groups (tanks)?
👉 4 groups
Step 2: How many in each tank?
👉 2 fish in each
Step 3: Write the addition sentence!
2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
Great job! We added 2 four times to get 8 fish in total!

Target: 15-Minute Small Group
Tier 2 / Remedial Math
Lesson 1 Breakthrough Goal:
Students must clearly differentiate between the number of groups (how many containers/piles) and the size of each group (how many items in each pile) before writing repeated addition sentences.
15-Minute CRA Intervention Protocol
1. Concrete (5 min) C
Place 3 paper plates on table. Distribute exactly 4 two-color counters onto each plate.
Script: "How many plates do you see? (3). How many counters in each plate? (4). Are they equal?"
2. Visual (5 min) R
Display Slide 3 or draw circles on whiteboard. Students physically touch each drawn circle and count aloud.
Script: "We have 3 plates. Inside plate one is 4, inside plate two is 4, inside plate three is 4."
3. Abstract (5 min) A
Transition to the addition equation. Write:
4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Script: "Notice what repeats! The number 4 repeats 3 times. We add 4 three times."
Watch Out For: Common Misconceptions & Rapid Corrections
Student Error Why It Happens Intervention Response
Adds group count + item count:
"3 plates of 4 = 3 + 4 = 7"
Sees numbers 3 and 4 and uses default addition schema.
Fix: Put plates on the table. "You can't add a plate to a cookie! Are plates cookies? No. We only add the cookies inside each plate."
Repeats the group count instead of group size:
"3 + 3 + 3 + 3"
Confuses "how many groups" with "what is inside each group".
Fix: Anchor with tactile finger taps: Point to each plate. "Plate 1 has 4. Plate 2 has 4. Plate 3 has 4. What number keeps saying hello? 4!"

What happens when equal groups line up in neat, tidy rows?
They make an ARRAY! An array is the neatest way to see repeated addition.

1. Equal Groups Distinguishes equal vs unequal
Counts total items only; does not notice when groups have unequal amounts.
Spots unequal groups with visual prompts, but mixes up group count and size.
Instantly checks group equality and identifies "how many groups" vs "how many in each".
2. Repeated Addition Writes repeated addends
Adds group count to group size (e.g. 3 + 4 = 7 instead of 4 + 4 + 4).
Writes repeated addition but miscounts the number of repeated terms.
Accurately writes and solves repeated addition equations matching any model.
3. The "×" Symbol Reads "groups of"
Does not recognize the connection between the "×" symbol and "groups of".
Translates with sentence frames; occasional reversals of groups and size.
Fluently decodes "a × b" as "a groups of b" and connects to the correct addition.
4. Arrays & Hops Rows, columns & lines
Counts individual grid boxes one by one; cannot identify rows.
Identifies rows but confuses horizontal rows with vertical columns.
Models arrays on grids and draws accurate equal jumps along a number line.
Targeted Remediation Playbook
If Student Adds Factors (e.g. 3 × 4 = 7):
Use physical muffin tins or sorting cups. Label the tins "Pockets" and fill each with counters. Have the student physically dump the counters out to see that there are 12 items, not 7.
If Student Confuses Rows and Columns:
Teach the physical gesture: "Rows rest on the bed ➡️ (lay hand flat); Columns are tall Greek columns ⬇️ (chop downward)." Highlight each row with a different colored highlighter.
