NY-PK.CC.2 Standard
Duration: 35–45 Minutes
Target Standard & Measurable Objectives
NY-PK.CC.2: Represent a number of objects (0–5), with a written numeral 0–5 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
Objective 1: Counting Sets
Children will touch and count a set of 0–5 critter manipulatives with 1-to-1 correspondence and state the total cardinal amount.
Objective 2: Matching Numerals
Children will identify and pair the correct written numeral (0–5) with a corresponding set or empty frame (representing 0).
Math Vocabulary
- • Count: Say in order (1, 2, 3...)
- • How many: The total amount
- • Numeral: The written symbol
- • Zero (0): None / empty set
- • Five-Frame: 5 garden boxes

• 15–20 plastic counters per pair (frogs/bugs)

Whole Group
Gather learners on the carpet. Chant "Five Friendly Frogs on a Log" using finger puppets or fingers:
"Five green frogs sitting on a log, catching some bugs in the morning fog. One jumps in the pond with a splash—wheee! Now how many frogs do we see?"
Demonstrate counting down to zero. Emphasize: "When all frogs jump in the water, how many are on the log? Zero! None! Zero is a number too!"
2 Explicit Modeling: Touch, Count, & Match (10 Minutes)
Slides & Magnetic Board
- One-to-One Touch Principle: Place 3 ladybugs on a magnetic 5-frame. Touch each critter once from left to right: "1, 2, 3." Prompt students to echo: "The last number we said was 3, so there are 3 ladybugs!"
- Linking to Numeral: Show numeral cards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Ask: "Who can point to the numeral 3?" Model tracing numeral 3 in the air ("Around the tree, around the tree, that's how we make a three!").
- Representing Zero: Clear the frame completely. Ask: "How many critters are here now?" Display numeral 0: "Zero looks like an empty pond or closed circle!"

Center Activities (15–20 Minutes)
Center 1: Five-Frame Critter Mats
Children roll a 0–5 dotted die or draw a numeral card, then place matching plastic bugs or counters on their 5-frame garden mat.
Manipulatives Focus
Center 2: Critter Card Match Game
Partners match picture cards of critters (0 to 5) to large written numeral cards. A blank pond card pairs with the numeral 0.
Partner Game
Center 3: Dot & Circle Activity Sheet
Children count pictured sets in each row and use dot-markers, crayons, or stickers to mark the matching numeral 0–5.
Independent Practice
Center 4: Teacher Observation Table
Conduct quick 2-minute 1-on-1 checks: Present 4 counters, ask "How many?", then ask student to locate the matching numeral card.

Common Misconceptions
- • Rushing: Saying numbers faster than fingers touch. Remedy: Have student slide each object into an egg carton or 5-frame slot.
- • Cardinality Confusion: Counting 1, 2, 3, then answering "5" when asked "How many?". Remedy: Circle the final group with both hands.
Targeted Differentiation
- • Support: Anchor with linear tracks (0–3 objects only); use tactile touch dots beneath pictures.
- • Extension: Subitizing without counting (instant recognition of dice patterns 1–5); challenge child to show quantity with finger combinations.
