Critter Count Teacher Guide Kindergarten Math CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.B.3
Critter Count Teacher Guide
45–60 Minutes
Learning Objectives
• Sort & Classify: Group scattered animal pictures into clear categories.
• Graph Data: Construct a vertical picture graph using 1-to-1 correspondence (1 box = 1 critter).
• Compare Quantities: Analyze graph towers to determine which group has more , fewer , or the same .
Materials Checklist
Pond Pals Sort Activity
Safari Picture Graph Sheet
Crayons (4 distinct colors)
Optional: Counting cubes
Key Vocabulary & Kid-Friendly Definitions
Sort Putting things that match into groups
Picture Graph A chart that uses pictures to show how many
More / Most A larger number or taller tower
Fewer / Least A smaller number or shorter tower
Phase 1 Launch: The Mystery Safari Bag (10 Min)
Whole Group Rug
Hook: Display a collection of plastic safari counters (or animal cutouts) jumbled inside a clear bowl. "Oh no, explorers! Our safari animals are all mixed up! How can we find out how many lions, elephants, and monkeys we have?"
Facilitate Sorting: Guide students to notice attributes (type, color, stripes). Call 3 volunteers to physically sort them into 3 distinct plates or hoops. Reinforce the vocabulary word SORT .
Phase 2 Teach & Model: Building the Class Graph (15 Min)
Interactive Modeling
Bottom-to-Top Rule: Draw a baseline on the board with animal icons at the bottom. Emphasize: "Graphs grow like trees from the ground up! We always start at box 1."
1-to-1 Correspondence: Color or place one box for each counted critter. Count out loud together: "1 lion, 2 lions, 3 lions!" Cross off animals on the messy pile as you graph to prevent double-counting.
Visual Comparison: Ask: "Which animal column is the tallest? That means it has MORE ! Which tower is the shortest? That means it has FEWER !"

Teacher Notes
Phase 3 Stations & Independent Practice (20 Min)
Small Group / Partners
Station A: Pond Pals Sorting
Students color-code critters in the pond (Frogs = Green, Ducks = Yellow, Turtles = Brown), cross each out as they count, and record numerals in the count bubbles.
Station B: Safari Graphing
Students fill the vertical picture graph from bottom to top. Then they complete the "More, Fewer, Same" comparison cards by comparing heights of the columns.
Common Misconceptions & Quick Fixes
Floating Blocks (Starting from the top or middle):
Correction: Have students place their finger on the bottom animal label and say "Ground floor first!" before shading box #1.
Double Counting or Skipping Items:
Correction: Teach the "Pencil Tap & Slash" routine—draw an 'X' or slash through each critter immediately after counting it.
Confusing Physical Size with Count:
Correction: Remind learners: 2 giant elephants are fewer than 5 tiny frogs. The graph squares are all the same size so we can count accurately!
Scaffolding Support (Struggling)
• Use physical math linking cubes to build towers on top of the worksheet squares first.
• Pre-sort with 3 distinct colored paper plates before recording.
• Focus on 2 categories with totals up to 3 before moving to 4 categories.
Extension Challenges (Advanced)
• "How many more?" : Ask learners to count the exact empty boxes to find the difference.
• Combine two categories: "How many critters fly or swim altogether?"
• Prompt students to formulate their own question for a classmate to answer.
Quick Observational Rubric (K.MD.B.3)
Skill Developing (1) Proficient (2) Mastery (3) 1. Sorting & Counting Misses items; counts same item twice Accurately sorts and counts up to 5 with prompting Independently slashes and tallies all categories accurately 2. Picture Graphing Shades boxes randomly without bottom alignment Builds towers from bottom up with 1:1 match Labels and reads vertical towers effortlessly 3. Comparing Groups Guesses without looking at tower height Identifies more/fewer by comparing tower height Explains why using "more", "fewer", or "equal/same"

What to Look For During Independent Work:
✓ Did the student begin coloring at the bottom row (1) rather than the top (5)?
✓ Does the student touch and count each shaded block with 1:1 correspondence?
✓ When asked "How many more monkeys than lions?", can they count the 2 extra squares?

Card 1: 4 Zebras vs 2 Hippos
4 is greater than 2
Correct: MORE
Card 2: 3 Crocodiles vs 5 Birds
3 is less than 5
Correct: FEWER
Card 3: 4 Cheetahs vs 4 Koalas
Equal quantities (4 = 4)
Correct: THE SAME
Bonus Challenge: 5 Stars vs 2 Stars
Box A has 5 stars, Box B has 2 stars
Correct: Box A has MORE
Teacher Diagnostic & Intervention Matrix Quick Response
If the student... The root issue is likely... Immediate Intervention: Selects "MORE" when the question asks which group has "FEWER" Vocabulary confusion ("fewer" vs "more") Use visual hand gestures (hands spread wide for "MORE", hands pinched close for "FEWER"). Pair "fewer" with "less/smaller number".
