2 Players • Grades 1-3 • 15-20 Min
Required Materials: 1 Gameboard per pair, 2 different colored pencils (e.g. Red for P1, Blue for P2), 1 Recording Sheet, and 1 Answer Key.
STEP 1
Choose Your Battle Mode
Mode A: Speed Duel
Both players begin at the countdown: "3, 2, 1, ADD!" Race through your lane. First player to finish with 100% correct answers earns a +1 Speed Bonus Point for the round.
Best for: Confident fact recall & quick fluency practice.
Mode B: Referee Clash
Player 1 solves Challenge A while Player 2 observes as the Official Referee . Then swap! The referee checks the strategy. If correct, player scores the round point immediately.
Best for: Mathematical communication & error checking.
Mode C: Team Blitz
Cooperative play! Both players work as teammates. Pool your earned points across all 4 rounds to defeat the Math Monster Target (Target: 26 out of 30 total combined points).
Best for: Collaborative support & mixed-ability pairs.
STEP 2
Arena Rules & Math Strategies
Round 1: Dot Dash 3 Pts
Strategy: Look for recognizable groups (dice patterns or 5-frames). Start with the larger group of dots and count on with the second group. Write the sum in the box.
Round 2: Number Line Leap 3 Pts
Strategy: Find the starting bold number. Draw curved pencil hops to count forward. The tick mark where your final jump lands is your final sum.
Round 3: Block Buster 3 Pts
Strategy: Count total tens rods first (each rod = 10). Then count the unit cubes (each cube = 1). Combine tens and ones (e.g., 3 tens and 7 ones = 37).
Round 4: Column Clash 6 Pts
Strategy: Always add the ones column first ! If the sum is 10 or greater, write the regrouped ten in the top dotted box, then add the tens column.
The Code of Sportsmanship
Respectful Checks: If your partner makes a math mistake, kindly point out the step and let them recalculate.
Honest Scoring: Record genuine points on the Recording Sheet after verifying with the Answer Key.
Arena Finish: Win or lose, offer a handshake or high-five: "Great game, math partner!"
Teacher Note: Provide linking cubes or physical base-ten blocks at the station for students who need tactile support.

Students often count the starting tick instead of counting the jumps/spaces forward. Prompt: "Count each leap, not where you stand!"
