Sound Safari Lesson Plan
Target Sounds /m/ • /s/ • /b/ • /t/
Grade Level Kindergarten
Duration 45 Minutes
Focus Domain Phonemic Awareness
CCSS Standard RF.K.2.D & RF.K.3.A
Learning Objectives
Isolate the initial phoneme (/m/, /s/, /b/, /t/) in familiar spoken words.
Connect spoken initial sounds to uppercase and lowercase letters.
Locate and categorize everyday classroom items by their initial sound.
Safari Materials Required
Pretend paper-tube safari binoculars or hand lenses
Printed Safari Tracker Activity sheets & clipboards
Mystery Sound Bag containing target classroom items
4 Bins/baskets labeled with large M, S, B, and T
1 Safari Launch & Chanted Echo Warm-Up 10 Minutes
Gather learners at the meeting rug. Introduce the Sound Safari Expedition by having students put on their imaginary safari explorer hats and twist on their "Safari Listening Ears."
Call-and-Response Safari Chant:
Teacher: "Pack your gear, tune your ear! What’s the first sound that you hear?"
Students: "Listen close, listen clear! We can name the sound right here!"
Teacher holds up animal cards or says words with stretched initial sounds: "Mmmmonkey! What's that beginning sound?" Students echo: "/m/!"
2 Modeling with the Mystery Sound Bag 10 Minutes
Demonstrate the detective routine using a Mystery Safari Backpack. Pull out one concrete item at a time:
Item 1: Marker
Stretch the sound: "M-m-marker." Isolate /m/. Point to letter M on the anchor chart.
Item 2: Scissors
Hiss like a snake: "S-s-scissors." Isolate /s/. Match with letter S .
Item 3: Book
Bounce the sound: "B-b-book." Isolate /b/. Match with letter B .
Item 4: Tape
Tap tongue: "T-t-tape." Isolate /t/. Match with letter T .

Stages 3 & 4 + Differentiation
3 Active Classroom Sound Safari (Independent / Partner) 15 Minutes
Equip each explorer with a clipboard, pencil, and the Safari Tracker Activity sheet. Learners move quietly through designated classroom zones.
Safari Rule 1: Whisper Sound
Say the item name quietly 3 times to yourself before marking it down.
Safari Rule 2: Sketch or Trace
Draw a quick picture in the target letter crate and trace the letter.
Safari Rule 3: Scout Buddy
Confirm the sound with a partner: "Does 'table' start like 'tiger'?"
4 Campfire Debrief & Sound Basket Sort 10 Minutes
Reconvene around the pretend classroom campfire. Call on volunteers to bring one found item (or hold up their tracker sketch) and state: "I found a [pencil/block]. The first sound is [/p/ or /b/]. It belongs in the [B] basket!" The class gives a silent safari thumbs-up.
Targeted Differentiation & Scaffolding
Emergent / ELL Support
Use tactile 3D letters to touch while making the sound.
Provide pre-stickered classroom zones with picture cues.
Focus on continuous sounds first (/m/, /s/) before stop sounds (/b/, /t/).
On-Level Explorers
Find at least one item for each of the 4 target letters.
Practice articulating the feeling of mouth/lips when producing phonemes.
Trace uppercase and lowercase letters cleanly on tracker.
Extension / Advanced
Challenge students to also identify the final sound in found words (e.g., /t/ at the end of "mat").
Have them write the beginning letter sound unassisted below their sketch.
Observational Assessment Checklist
Observed Skill Developing (1) Approaching (2) Proficient (3) Sound Isolation Blends entire word together; struggles to isolate. Isolates sound with teacher modeling/elongation. Independently states first sound promptly. Sound-Letter Match Matches sound to letter inconsistently. Matches /m/ and /s/; mixes /b/ and /t/. Correctly matches all 4 sounds to corresponding letters. Object Selection Chooses items at random without sound connection. Finds items for 2-3 target sounds with prompting. Accurately finds and categorizes items for all 4 targets.

Count Magic Lesson Plan
Standard K.Mod1.AD6 • K.CC.4b
Grade Level Kindergarten
Duration 35–40 Minutes
Core Concept Conservation of Number
Focus Range Quantities to 5 (Ext. to 8)
Kindergarten Essential Question:
“Do I have to count again when a group of objects is moved or rearranged?”
Key Math Truth: No! Moving objects does not change how many there are. If nothing was added and nothing was taken away, the total count stays the exact same!
The 4 Simple Steps Routine
1 Touch & Count Once
Line up the objects (e.g., 5 counting bears). Touch each one: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5. There are 5 bears!”
2 Watch the Magic Move
Rearrange the group into a circle, a tall tower, or a scattered pile right in front of student eyes.
3 Ask the 2 Magic Checks
“Did anyone ADD any?” (No!) “Did anyone TAKE any away?” (No!)
4 Lock in the Count!
Shout the rule: “The count stays the same! Still 5! No recounting needed!”
Launch: The Magic Counter Mystery 10 Minutes
Place 5 giant magnetic foam dots on the whiteboard in a straight row. Guide the class to count in unison: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5!”
Teacher Script & Action:
“Now, watch closely! I'm waving my invisible magic math wand! Abracadabra!” (Slide the 5 dots into a circle). “How many dots are on the board right now? Do we need to count them all over again, or do you already know?”
Guide students away from immediate recounting: “Wait! Before you touch and count, did I put another dot up? No! Did I put one in my pocket? No! So how many MUST there be? Still 5!”

Hands-on Scrambles & Practice
Partner Math Game: “Scramble & Freeze!” 15 Minutes
Pair students with a tray of 5 two-color counters or linking cubes.
Partner A: The Builder
Arranges 4 or 5 cubes in a neat train. Both partners count aloud together: “1, 2, 3, 4!”
Partner B: The Scrambler
Scrambles the cubes across the mat like stars in the sky! Shouts: “Freeze!”
Both: The Magic Call
Partner A asks: “How many now?” Partner B immediately says: “Still 4! The count stays the same!”

The Big Kindergarten Question
Think Like a Mathematician
“If we count a group of bears in a line, and then scramble them in a circle... do we have to count them all over again?”
Let's discover the secret in 4 simple steps!
Get your counting fingers ready! Step 1 is next →
1
Step One
Touch & Count in a Line
Say each number clearly!
Touch each purple star with your finger:
1
2
3
4
5
Total Count in the Line: Exactly 5 Stars!
2
Step Two
Watch the Magic Scramble!
Abracadabra!
They moved! They are not in a line anymore! Now what do we ask?
3
Step Three
Ask the 2 Magic Questions
Look closely!
Question 1:
“Did anyone ADD any more stars?”
NO!
Question 2:
“Did anyone TAKE any away?”
NO!
None were added. None were taken away. That means...

Step Four
The Golden Math Rule
Standard K.Mod1.AD6
The Magic Discovery:
Do we need to count again?
NO RECOUNTING NEEDED!
The count stays the exact same: STILL 5!
Moving things never changes how many there are!
Practice Round
Your Turn, Magicians!
Look at the Bears
First: Bears in a Row
We counted: 4 bears!
Now: Bears in a Circle!
How many now? Still 4!
Did we have to count again? NO! We trusted our count!
Classroom Chant
The Count Stays Same Cheer!
Stand Up & Chant
“Line them up or spread them wide,”
“Spin them in a circle slide!”
“None put in, none taken away,”
THE COUNT WILL ALWAYS STAY!
Now let's practice with our math trays and worksheets!
