If you align your object to the physical end of the wood or plastic, your measurement will be completely wrong !

ADVANCED METHOD
What if the Zero is Broken?
Sometimes rulers chip, break, or the zero mark is hidden.
Can we still measure? Yes!
We can align our object with 1 instead of 0! We just need some simple detective math to find the true length.
The "Starts at 1" Challenge:

Misconceptions & Troubleshooting
Starting at 1 without subtracting: In "Broken Ruler" situations, students often read the end number (e.g., ends at 4, so they say "4 inches") without subtracting the starting value 1. Reinforce that if they start at 1, they must subtract 1 from the final number to find the actual span!

Find the "cm" Side
Double check that you're looking at the centimeter side (smaller divisions) and not the inches side!
Spot the First Long Tick

Centimeter Troubleshooting
