Identify extremes in data and perform comparison math in the journal.
The "Peak" Strategy
Teach students to look at the 1/2 inch mark as a "mountain peak." If their object ends past the peak, they roll down to the higher number. If it ends before the peak, they roll back to the lower number.
Crucial: Emphasize that "whole inches" means absolutely no fractions allowed in this expedition!
Raider Performance Rubric
Skill Needs Training Scout Master Raider Tool Alignment Starts at 1 or middle of ruler. Starts at 0; tool is crooked. Consistently starts at 0 and flush. Whole Inch Rule Writes fractions or halves. Sometimes rounds incorrectly. All measurements are whole numbers. Estimation Estimates are wildly off scale. Within 5-10 inches of actual. Strong sense of scale (within 3in). Data Analysis Cannot identify extremes. Identifies items; math is incorrect. Accurate extremes and math.
Pro-Tips for Success
Team Pairs: This works best with partners. One student holds the tool steady while the other reads and records.
Orientation: Encourage students to measure height, width, and even depth for a variety of data points.
Safety Briefing: Model yardstick safety before leaving. Remind them they are "explorers," not "knights" with swords!

How to round like a Master Raider

ROUND UP
If it's at or past the peak, go to the next whole number!
ROUND DOWN
If it's before the peak, go back to the lower number!
RAIDER TECHNIQUE

Always align the very edge of your object with the 0 mark.
THE FLUSH FIT
Keep the ruler flat and straight against the object. No diagonal raiding!

When objects are longer than 12 inches, we use a yardstick. It has 36 inches!
The Tape Measure
For objects that curve or are very, very long, a flexible tape measure is our best friend.
