Building Better Problem Solvers
Grade 3 Tier 2 Intervention
Today's Mission
1
We will visualize the action in a story to choose the right math tool.
2
We will use models (groups and arrays) to solve word problems within 100.
3
We will prove our answers without using "tricky" keywords.
Keyword Warning!
Keywords like "each" or "total" can be sneaky. They don't always tell the truth!
"Sam has 5 boxes. Each box has 2 toys. How many toys?" (Multiplication)
"Sam has 10 toys. He puts 2 in each box. How many boxes?" (Division)
The Solution:
Visualize the Action
The Blueprint Strategy
READ
Picture the story. What is happening? Who are the groups?
DRAW
Model the groups, arrays, or lengths. Show the math!
SOLVE
Write an equation and answer the question with units.
Example 1: Equal Groups
"Farmer Ben has 4 baskets. He puts 6 apples into every basket. How many apples did he pick in all?"
The Visual:
Equation:
4 × 6 = 24
Answer: 24 apples
Example 2: Arrays
"The gym teacher put out 20 dodgeballs. He made 5 equal rows. How many balls are in each row?"
Think About It:
We have the total (20) and the number of rows (5). We are finding the size of the row.
20 ÷ 5 = 4
Answer: 4 dodgeballs
