Peek-a-Boo Counting within 5
Developing Finger Fluency, Instant Quantity Recognition (Subitizing), and Math Explanations
Pacing 20 Mins Tier 1 Core Routine
Learning Goals
Students instantly recognize and show 1–5 objects on fingers without one-by-one counting (perceptual & conceptual subitizing).
Materials & Supports
1 solid folder, Peek-a-boo Cards (2 baseballs, 3 fruits, 3 lemons+1 apple, 5 bananas), Worksheet, and Tactile Support Mat.
Key Math Habit
"See, Flash, Explain" — silent finger flash first, then explain the decomposition (e.g., "I saw 3 and 1 more, that makes 4!").
1
Fluency Warm-Up: Finger Flashes 1 to 5
5 Minutes
Objective: Build muscle memory and rapid finger representation so students show quantities instantly without looking down at each finger.
Step-by-Step Teacher Script
• "Wiggle your math fingers in the air! Close them into tight rocks (fists)."
• "When I call a number, pop up that many fingers all at once—like fireworks!"
• "Ready? Show me 2 !" (Pause 2 sec). "Freeze your fingers! Check your neighbor's hand."
• Call numbers in scrambled sequence: 1, 3, 2, 4, 5, 3 .
Instructional Tips & Cues
• Math Way vs. Free Way: Encourage popping fingers up starting from the pinky or thumb consistently (Left-to-Right progression).
• The "Pop" Rule: Challenge children not to count "1, 2, 3" one finger at a time; practice throwing the shape out as a unit.
• Tactile Differentiation: Students struggling to isolate fingers can place hands flat on the Peekaboo Support Mat .

Core Routine: Peek-a-Boo Folder Counting
10 Minutes
The teacher uses a solid folder as a curtain. The card is hidden, flashed for exactly 2 to 3 seconds , then covered again. This brief exposure discourages one-by-one pointing and compels perceptual grouping.
Step A • Ready
Folder is fully raised, hiding card. Students put hands behind backs or on mat.
Step B • Peek (2-3s)
Folder drops! Eyes take a mental photo. Silent subitizing only.
Step C • Flash
Folder covers picture. Teacher prompts: "Show me on your fingers!"
Step D • Explain
Reveal card again. "How did you know so fast without counting each one?"

Pop your whole hand out!" Prompt: "All 5 fingers! A whole hand full! How did you spot 5 so quickly? (e.g., filled line of 5, or 3 top and 2 bottom)."
Scaffolding & Intervention Support
• Tactile Support Mat: Use the companion Peekaboo Support Mat with 5-frame counter runway for concrete touch practice.
• Longer Peek: Extend exposure from 2s to 4s to reduce processing anxiety.
• Multilingual Choral Chants: Pair finger flashes with English and home-language number words (one/uno, two/dos).
Challenge & Extensions (Quick Subitizers)
• Two-Hand Combinations: For 4 or 5, challenge: "Show me 4 using TWO hands! (2 and 2, or 3 and 1)."
• Speed Peek: Drop folder for just 1 second (pure perceptual flash).
• "How Many to 5?": "If you saw 3, how many more do we need to make 5?" (Anchor to 5).
Formative Observation Checklist (What to Look For) Tier 1 Anecdotal Notes
Level 1 • Emergent
Relies on counting fingers 1-by-1 starting at 1. Uses tactile support mat and counters to verify.
Level 2 • Targeted
Instantly flashes 1, 2, and 3 without counting. Subitizes 4 and 5 with brief pause or grouping.
Level 3 • Advanced
Pops whole finger group instantly and verbalizes part-whole chunking (e.g., "3 lemons + 1 apple = 4").

Flexible Hand Shapes
Accept any combination (e.g., thumb + index for 2, or index + middle). Comfort with quantity precedes standard finger conventions.
Whisper Countdown
Give a 3-second visual silent countdown on your own fingers before saying "Show!" so processing speed differences don't cause panic.

Concrete Token Bridge
Provide 5 two-color counters on the Five-Frame Runway. After the peek, student pushes 2 red counters forward before attempting fingers.
Peekaboo Counting Assessment Rubric Formative Assessment Kindergarten Math • K.CC.B.4 • K.CC.B.5
Peek-a-Boo Subitizing & Fluency Rubric
Assessment Target: Quantities 1 to 5
Math Skill Domain 1 • Emerging 2 • Developing 3 • Proficient (Mastery) 4 • Advanced Perceptual Subitizing Baseballs (2) & Fruits (3) Cannot recognize 2 or 3 without counting one-by-one; often guesses or requires physical touching. Instantly identifies 1 and 2, but counts 3 sequentially with head nodding or finger counting. Instant (<2s): Names and identifies 1, 2, and 3 without pointing or counting each item.Instant flash recognition under 1 second; identifies scattered arrangements without pause. Conceptual Subitizing 3 Lemons + 1 Apple (4), Bananas (5) Cannot group items; counts each fruit 1-by-1 starting from 1; loses count on 4 or 5. Counts 1-by-1 but notices colors; requires >4 seconds to find total; misses part-part grouping. Chunks Groups: Sees 3 lemons and 1 apple as 3 and 1 making 4; recognizes 5 as full hand.Instantly combines multiple subgroupings (e.g., 2+2 or 3+1 for 4; 3+2 or 4+1 for 5); relates to 5-frame. Finger Fluency "Math Fingers" Representation Struggles with finger motor isolation; pushes fingers up one-by-one slowly; checks fingers repeatedly. Can produce 1, 2, and 3 as a pop; must count out 4 and 5 one finger at a time. Rapid Pop (<2s): Throws out full finger quantity simultaneously without counting up from 1.Instantly displays quantities flexibly (using either hand, or decomposing 4 as 2 on each hand). Math Explanation "How Did You See It?" Unable to explain: shrugs or says "I just guessed." Relies on peer responses. Says "I counted: 1, 2, 3, 4" ; cannot describe perceptual chunks or subgroupings. Explains Chunks: "I saw 3 lemons and 1 apple, and that makes 4!" Uses part-whole words.Verbalizes equations and anchors: "4 is 1 less than a full 5 hand!" or "3 plus 1 equals 4."
