The Golden Rule: Decimal Alignment
To add or subtract decimals, you must align numbers by their actual place value. The absolute easiest way to achieve perfect structural alignment is to line up the decimal points vertically!

Line Up Decimals: Stack numbers vertically so that the decimal points form a perfectly straight vertical line.

Annex Zeros: Fill in any blank spaces with placeholder 0s so both values have the same decimal length.

Drop Decimal: Bring the decimal point straight down directly into your answer line first.
04
Calculate: Complete your calculations column by column, regrouping or borrowing as normal.

Treat each place value of the multiplier as a separate calculation step. Stack columns precisely.

Multiply Ones: Multiply the top factor by the ones place of bottom factor.

Zero Placeholder: Drop a 0 on row two to shift to the tens.

Phase B: The Decimal Shift
Do not line up decimals initially. Multiply as whole numbers, then apply the shift.

Count Spaces: Count total numbers to the right of decimals in both factors.

Shift Left: Start at the very right of final sum, shift decimal left that total amount.
