Multiplication Stations Lesson Plan Teacher Facilitation Guide Grade 3 Review
Multiplication Quest Review Stations
Timing: 60–75 Min
4 Stations • 12–15 Min / Rotation
Instructional Purpose & Quest Narrative
Students team up as "Math Questers" rotating through four gamified challenges designed to review high-stakes multiplication concepts before the unit assessment. Each center targets a critical Arizona Mathematics Standard through hands-on modeling, decoding, and contextual problem-solving.
Arizona Mathematics Standards Alignment
Station 1: Commutative Switch AZ 3.OA.B.5
Apply properties of operations (commutative property) as strategies to multiply and prove \(a \times b = b \times a\).
Station 2: Array Arcade AZ 3.OA.A.1
Interpret products of whole numbers as total objects in equal groups, rows/columns of arrays, and tiled area grids.
Station 3: Mystery Factor Vault AZ 3.OA.A.4
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers (\(a \times ? = c\)).
Station 4: Story Safari AZ 3.OA.A.3
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve contextual word problems involving equal groups and arrays.

Station Facilitation & Differentiation
Part 2 of 2
Grouping & Rotation Mechanics
Recommended: Heterogeneous Squads
Place 4–6 students per group with mixed math confidence. Pair each student with an "Accountability Buddy" to talk through reasoning before writing on their passport.
Teacher Anchor: Station 3 or 4
Anchor yourself near Station 3 (Missing Factors) or Station 4 (Word Problems) to provide targeted guided questioning while observing student mental math fluency.
Teacher Roaming Questions by Station
Station 1 (Commutative):
"If we rotate the card 90 degrees, how do the rows and columns change? Why does the total number of items stay identical?"
Station 2 (Arrays):
"Show me the difference between 3 rows of 6 and 6 rows of 3. What repeated addition sentence proves your product?"
Station 3 (Missing Factors):
"What related division fact can help you unlock this unknown factor? What number times 7 gives 42?"
Station 4 (Word Problems):
"What are the equal groups in this story problem? What is the size of each group? Did you draw a bar model or array?"
Tiered Support & Extension Options
Support / Intervention
Provide physical two-color counters and 10×10 grid graph paper.
Provide a mini multiplication chart (1–10) with highlighted fact families.
Allow partner co-solving where students verify using skip counting.
Challenge / Extension
Prompt students to write a reciprocal division equation for every problem.
Challenge Questers to decompose a factor using distributive property (e.g., \(7 \times 6 = (5 \times 6) + (2 \times 6)\)).
Have early finishers design their own card for Station 4.
Assessment Debrief Routine (Last 10 Minutes)
Call all questers back to the carpet. Have student pairs compare their passport answers against the Master Screen or Teacher Key. Have each student self-rate their test confidence (1–3 stars) on each standard box at the bottom of their passport.

Commutative Switcheroo!
Turnaround Arena
🎯 Mission Rule
Switch the factor order: if \(4 \times 6 = 24\), then \(6 \times 4 = 24\)!
🔄 Visual Twist
Rotate arrays 90 degrees to prove rows and columns swap totals!
⭐ Passport Goal
Record the original and turnaround fact for Cards 1 to 4 on your passport.
1
The Cacti Garden Switch
Arizona Flora Theme
Original Garden Layout: 3 rows of 7 saguaros
\(3 \times 7 = 21\)
Your Turnaround Challenge:
Rotate this array 90 degrees in your mind or using counters. How many rows and columns are there now?
Write the turnaround multiplication equation and confirm whether the total number of saguaros changes.
2
The Desert Solar Grid
Array Rotation
Original Panel Setup: 4 rows of 8 panels
\(4 \times 8 = 32\)
Your Turnaround Challenge:

Arizona 3.OA Alignment
Quick-Roaming Reference
Station 1: Commutative Switcheroo (AZ 3.OA.B.5)
Turnaround Facts: \(a \times b = b \times a\)
Card 1: Cacti Garden Product = 21
Original: 3 × 7 = 21
Turnaround: 7 × 3 = 21
Look for: Student recognizes 7 rows of 3 yields the same 21 total saguaros.
Card 2: Solar Panels Product = 32
Original: 4 × 8 = 32
Turnaround: 8 × 4 = 32
Look for: Reorganizing into 8 rows creates 4 panels per row.
Card 3: Apple Baskets Product = 30
Original: 5 × 6 = 30
Turnaround: 6 × 5 = 30
Look for: 6 baskets must hold 5 apples each to equal 30 apples.
Card 4: Double Factor Flip Product = 36
Equations: 9 × 4 = 36 and 4 × 9 = 36
Explanation: Commutative property means order does not change product; students can compute 4 nines or 9 fours.
Boss Solution: Leo is incorrect. Subtraction is NOT commutative (\(7 - 5 = 2\), but \(5 - 7 \neq 2\)). Only multiplication and addition have this property.
Station 2: Array Arcade (AZ 3.OA.A.1)
Interpreting Arrays & Area Models
Card 1: Pinball Lights Product = 24
Structure: 4 rows of 6
Equation: 4 × 6 = 24
Addition: 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24.
Card 2: Starfighter Fleet Product = 27
Structure: 3 rows of 9
Equation: 3 × 9 = 27
Addition: 9 + 9 + 9 = 27.
Card 3: Dance Floor Tile Product = 30
Structure: 6 rows of 5 tiles
Equation: 6 × 5 = 30 square units
Reinforces area concept (\(\text{length} \times \text{width}\)).
Card 4: Hall of Fame Badges Product = 28
Structure: 7 rows of 4
Equation: 7 × 4 = 28
Skip counting: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28.
Boss Solution: Yes! \((5 \times 8) + (2 \times 8) = 40 + 16 = 56\). Breaking larger factors into 5s and 2s makes mental multiplication much easier.
