Gallery Geometry: Area & Perimeter
Grades 4-6
Duration: 75–90 Min
Lesson Essential Focus
Students act as architectural artists and mathematical curators. They design composite geometric artworks on grid paper, calculate exact area and perimeter for each geometric sub-region, and conduct a structured gallery walk to critique and verify peers' mathematical proofs.
Key Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT:
4.MD.A.3: Area & Perimeter formulas
5.NF / 6.G.A.1: Area of triangles & composite figures
MP.3 & MP.6: Precision & critique
Core Learning Objectives
1. Construct
Design multi-color composite art composed of at least 4 distinct polygons (rectangles, squares, composite L-shapes, triangles).
2. Compute
Calculate the precise perimeter (linear boundary) and area (surface coverage) of individual shapes and the combined composition.
3. Critique
Conduct a peer gallery audit, independently recalculating peer shape dimensions to audit accuracy using mathematical proof.

Gallery Walk Protocol: "Curator & Appraiser"
Station Setup & Rotation Rules
Artwork is taped with the Artwork Blueprint facing out and the calculation ledger initially folded back.
Appraisers observe the artwork, independently pick two shape zones , and compute perimeter/area on their critique sheets.
Appraisers unfold the artist's ledger to verify agreement and leave a mathematical sticky note praise/question.
Sentence Stems for Peer Critique
"I notice the perimeter of your blue polygon is ___ units because..."
"When decomposing your composite shape into rectangles, I calculated an area of..."
"Did you count the shared interior border when computing the total perimeter?"
Common Misconceptions & Intervention Prompts
Student Misconception Observed Behavior Teacher Coaching Prompt Shared Boundary in Composite Perimeter Adding perimeters of Shape A and Shape B to get total perimeter without subtracting the touching seam. "Trace your finger only around the outer fence of the artwork. Does your finger ever cross inside?" Unit Confusion (\(u\) vs. \(sq\ u\)) Writing "18 units" for area or "18 square units" for perimeter. "Is perimeter a length of fence or tiles of floor? What unit measures one-dimensional length?" Area of Right Triangles on Grid Miscounting diagonal half-squares or guessing fractional units. "Draw the full rectangle enclosing that triangle. What fraction of that rectangle does the triangle cover?"
Tiered Differentiation
Support / Scaffolding
Limit artwork to simple rectangles and squares with integer dimensions. Provide highlighters to color the outer perimeter boundary before calculating.
Target Level
Design composite shapes (L-shapes, T-shapes) requiring decomposition into 2-3 rectangles, plus at least one right triangle shape.
Extension / Challenge
Target Constraint Challenge: Design an artwork where total area must equal exactly 100 square units, but perimeter must be maximized or minimized.
Gallery Walk Debrief Discussion Prompts
"Can two artworks have the exact same area but completely different perimeters? Who saw an example in the gallery?"
"What happened to the perimeter when an artist made a long, thin shape versus a compact square shape of the same area?"
"How did decomposing complex shapes make area verification quicker and more reliable?"

Part B: Applied Mastery Problems
Problem 1: Gallery Exhibition Wall
The museum is installing an L-shaped display wall shown on the grid below. Each grid square is \(1\text{ meter} \times 1\text{ meter}\) .
(a) Total Area: Decompose into 2 rectangles.
Area = \(m^2\)
(b) Outer Perimeter: Find edge trim length around wall.
Perimeter = \(m\)
Display Wall Grid 2 m 6 m 5 m 2 m
Problem 2: The Perimeter Paradox
Curator Maya displays two rectangular paintings that each have an Area of 36 square feet . Painting A is a \(6\text{ ft} \times 6\text{ ft}\) square. Painting B is a \(2\text{ ft} \times 18\text{ ft}\) banner.
Painting A Perimeter:
\(P =\) ft
Painting B Perimeter:
\(P =\) ft
Curator Reasoning: Why does Painting B require so much more frame framing material even though both have the identical display area?

Mathematical Foundations
Area vs. Perimeter: What's the Difference?
Perimeter 1D Measure
The total distance around the outer boundary or rim of the artwork.
Think: The Picture Frame
Measured in linear units (\(u, \text{cm}, \text{in}\))
Area 2D Measure
The total surface space covered inside the shape's boundaries.
Think: The Painted Canvas
Measured in square units (\(u^2, \text{cm}^2, \text{sq ft}\))
Key Curator Rule: Never confuse linear units with square units on your exhibition ledger!
Artist Brief
Your Studio Design Challenge
4+ Polygons
Create at least 4 distinct colored shape zones (rectangles, squares, composite L-shapes).
Requirement 1
Composite Join
At least two shapes must touch along a shared edge to form a combined composite figure.
Requirement 2
Proof Ledger
Calculate the exact area and perimeter for each shape and your composite masterpiece.
Requirement 3
Canvas Size: 20 × 20 Grid Units Align all shapes precisely to grid intersections!
Strategy Workshop
Decomposing Composite Masterpieces
Step 01
Slice into Parts
Divide irregular L-shapes or combined polygons into simple non-overlapping rectangles.
Shape A + Shape B
Step 02
Sum the Areas
Multiply base × height for each slice, then add the products together for total coverage.
\(A_{\text{total}} = A_1 + A_2\)
Step 03
Outer Fence Only
For perimeter, trace ONLY exterior walls. Do NOT count interior seams!
Exterior Edges Only
Warning: Adding individual perimeters directly counts interior seams twice!
