Watch Out For: "The Invisible Whole"
Many students will successfully turn $\frac{5}{4}$ into $1\frac{1}{4}$ but then simply replace the original whole number with the new 1, or ignore the 1 entirely. Stress Mr. J's technique of drawing an arrow to combine the whole numbers.

Mr. J: Welcome to Math with Mr. J. In this video, I'm going to cover how to add mixed numbers with regrouping. Once we get to our answer, it's going to require some regrouping because the fractional parts are going to add to give us something more than a whole.

Mr. J: Now we need to rename... How do we get 2 to equal 4? Well, we know 2 times 2 equals 4. So whatever we do to the bottom, we have to do to the top in order to keep it equivalent.
Note: Rule of Equivalency - Maintain balance by performing identical operations on numerator and denominator.

Mr. J: Now we need to regroup and simplify. $5/4$ is an improper fraction. It's greater than one whole. We don't want to leave our answer like this. We need to convert that $5/4$ to a mixed number.
How many whole groups of 4 out of 5? Well, one whole group. Remainder of 1. So $5/4$ equals $1$ and $1/4$.

Mr. J: But that's not our final answer. Don't forget about this 8 wholes here. We need to combine our whole numbers. We are regrouping that 1 whole with the 8. So we get 9 wholes... and then don't forget about our fraction... 9 and 1/4.
Protocol check: Always combine the newly discovered whole number with the existing whole number from the initial addition.

Mr. J: [On Example 2] We do $22$ divided by $15$. How many whole groups of $15$ out of $22$? Well, 1... with 7 left over... Keep our denominator of $15$ the same. Don't forget about our $11$. We need to regroup or combine our whole $11$ and then that $1$ for our final answer.
