The Golden Rule: Line Them Up!
RULE #1
Just like support columns in a building, math columns must stand directly on top of each other.
If your decimal points do not line up perfectly, your columns will collapse!
Always line up by the decimal point , not by the last number. This keeps Tens, Ones, Tenths, and Hundredths together!
Wrong Line-up (Unsafe!) 12.4 + 3.85 = 5.09 ?

Our Helper: The Placeholder Zero
HELPER ZERO
Builders use temporary wooden frames to hold parts of a building in place while they work.
In decimals, we use Helper Zeros to hold empty places for us!
Adding a zero to the very end of a decimal does NOT change how much it is worth, but it makes adding much easier!
8.4 = 8.40 = 8.400

Four Steps to Adding Decimals
STEPS

Write down the first number with its decimal point clearly visible.

Line up the second number directly underneath decimal-to-decimal.

Put helper zeros in any empty boxes at the end of the numbers.

Add normally from right to left, then drop the decimal point straight down.

Right-Aligning Digits
The Defect: Students line up the final digits, treating decimals like whole numbers (e.g., adding 12.4 + 3.85 by placing the 5 under the 4).
The Fix: Point out that this mixes Tenths with Hundredths. Say: "A brick in the chimney does not support a tile in the bathroom!"
The Hidden Decimal
The Defect: Students are confused by whole numbers (e.g., 42 + 8.65) and fail to realize where the decimal point goes in the whole number.
The Fix: Teach: "Whole numbers are solid walls. The decimal point always sits directly on the right floor boundary: 42 is written 42.00."

Watch Out: The Danger Zone!
COMMON ERROR
In design, you can't build rooms if you don't know the exact dimensions of your space.
In math, trying to subtract a digit from a blank space is a major construction error!
If there is nothing in a column, you cannot just drag the bottom number down. You must write a helper 0 and borrow from the left!

Making Subtraction Safe
THE SAFE METHOD
How to Safely Subtract
Write a helper zero so your columns are even. Now you have a number on top to borrow into!
1. Line Up: Put 14.5 and 2.38 on top of each other.
2. Helper Zero: Rewrite 14.5 as 14.50.
3. Borrow: Borrow 1 tenth from the 5 to make Tenths 4 and Hundredths 10.
4. Subtract: 10 - 8 = 2, and 4 - 3 = 1.

Borrowing Across Zeros
CHAIN BORROWING
What if you are subtracting from a whole number of zeros, like 10.0 - 4.25?
You must trigger a chain reaction of borrowing from the first real number on the left.
Each column borrows from its neighbor to the left, changing middle zeros into 9s along the way, until the final column becomes a 10.

The Regrouping Bypass
The Defect: In whole-number subtractions like 15 - 8.36, students write 15.36, bypassing the subtraction algorithm entirely for the decimal part.
The Fix: Force the alignment: "15 is exactly 15.00. We must subtract 8.36 from 15.00, which requires chain borrowing across those zeros!"
