Essential Question: How do colors help us make repeating patterns, and how can we use real autumn treasures to count quantities up to 5 with accurate one-to-one touch?
Learning Objectives
Sort gathered fall leaves into color categories (Red, Yellow, Orange, Green/Brown).
Construct and verbalize alternating AB patterns (e.g., Red-Yellow-Red-Yellow).
Demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by pairing 1 to 5 leaves with matching numeral cards.
Materials Checklist
Basket of pressed or dry real leaves (approx. 10–15 per student).
Pattern Forest Activity Mat (1 per student).Acorn Trail Game Board & counters (1 per pair).Five-frame numeral cards (1–5) & small counting tray.
Phase 1: Circle Time Discovery (10 Mins) Whole Group Rug
Gather learners on the rug with a sensory autumn basket. Reveal 8–10 real leaves. Ask: "What colors did Mother Nature paint our leaves this morning?"
Teacher Script Prompt: "Look closely! I have shiny red maples and golden yellow birches. When I hold up a red leaf, let's say 'Red!' Now yellow! Can we sort our basket into little color piles before we build our leaf snake?"
Phase 2: Modeling AB Patterns (10 Mins) Carpet Modeling
Place leaves on a magnetic white board or pocket chart in an alternating line: Red → Yellow → Red → Yellow .
Chant & Clap: Have students clap hands for Red and tap knees for Yellow while reciting the pattern rhythmically.The Mystery Gap: Pause at the 5th spot. Ask: "Who can whisper to their partner what comes next? Is it Red or Yellow?" Fix the Sneaky Mistake: Intentionally place two yellows in a row. Prompt students to yell "Whoops!" and explain why the rule broke.

1 Station A: Pattern Forest Activity Mat 12 Mins • Independent / Pairs
Students place 4 sorted colors into sorting buckets, then build a 6-leaf alternating AB sequence in the designated path. Once finished, they read their pattern aloud to a partner (e.g., "Orange, Brown, Orange, Brown..." ).
2 Station B: 1-to-5 Leaf & Numeral Match 12 Mins • Teacher-Facilitated
Learners draw a numeral card (1–5) and count that exact number of real leaves onto the five-frame boxes. Emphasize the "touch-and-say" method: point finger to each leaf once while saying the number name, then circling all leaves to state the cardinal total.
3 Station C: Acorn Trail Counting Game Partner Game Play
Partners roll a 1–3 or 1–5 dot die and hop their acorn token along the woodland trail. When landing on a leaf spot, they collect matching leaf tokens into their basket until they collect 5 total.
Support & Scaffolding
Pre-mark pattern slots with color dot hints so students only match color to dot.
Limit counting sets to quantities 1 through 3 before moving to 4 and 5.
Provide textured counting trays to contain leaf manipulatives.
Extension & Challenge
Challenge students to create AAB or ABC patterns (e.g., Red-Red-Yellow or Red-Yellow-Green).
Ask: "If you have 3 leaves, how many more do you need to make 5?" (subitizing & combinations of 5).

1. Color Sorting Sorts leaves accurately into 2+ distinct color groups independently.
2. AB Patterning Extends an AB pattern by at least 2 complete repeats (4 items).
3. Counting 1 to 5 Demonstrates 1-to-1 touch counting up to 5 without double-counting.
