Schema Sleuths Lesson Plan SBI Framework Math Detective Agency • Grade 3–5
Schema Sleuths Lesson Plan
Duration: 65–75 Mins CCSS: 3.OA.D.8 / 4.OA.A.3 / MP1, MP4
Why Schema-Based Instruction (SBI)? Rote keyword hunting fails because words like "left" or "altogether" mislead students when problem structures shift. SBI trains students to categorize problem DNA into spatial representations before calculating, slashing working-memory overload during multi-step reasoning.
The Four Master Detective Schemas
1. Total (T)
Parts Combined
Part 1 + Part 2
= Total
No change over time; static aggregation.
2. Difference (D)
Comparison
Greater (Bigger)
Lesser Diff (D)
"How many more/fewer?", relational bar.
3. Change (C)
Timeline Shift
Start → ± Chg → End
Dynamic action in time (joined, lost, ate).
4. Equal Groups (EG)
Multiplicative
[x] [x] [x]
# Groups × Group Size
Repeated sets, sharing equally, rows/arrays.
1 Phase 1: The "Keyword Trap" Crime Scene (10 Mins) Hook & Awareness
Hook Script: "Detectives, keywords are tricksters! Look at this clue: 'Leo had 15 clues, which is 6 fewer than Maya.' If you only look at 'fewer', you will subtract. But does Leo have more or Maya? Maya has more!"
Detective Rule #1: Never crunch numbers before sketching the case blueprint. Identify the relationship first!
2 Phase 2: Master Sleuth Modeling (I Do / We Do) (20 Mins) Direct Modeling
Present Case File #101: The Mystery Bakery on slides. Model the 3-step investigation protocol aloud:
Step A: Interrogate What is happening? Is an amount changing over time, or are we comparing two suspects?
Step B: Tag Schema Step 1 is Equal Groups (4 trays of 8 muffins). Step 2 is Change (sold 14 muffins).
Step C: Solve & Verify Fill unknown \(?\) in diagram. Equation: \((4 \times 8) - 14 = 18\) muffins remaining.

3 Phase 3: Partner Fieldwork & Detective Briefs (15 Mins) Collaborative Practice
Detectives work in pairs on the Case Files Detective Worksheet . Require partners to debate and stamp the schema icon before picking up their pencils to calculate. The "Voice of Doubt" partner role challenges: "Why is this Change and not Difference?"
4 Phase 4: Schema Showdown Game Rotation (15 Mins) Applied Fluency
Students play the Schema Showdown Board Game in teams of 2–3. Players draw mystery case cards, classify the required schema combination to unlock the evidence safe, and score badge tokens for precise mathematical explanations.
5 Phase 5: Case Closed Debrief & Exit Stamp (5–10 Mins) Synthesis
Gather at HQ. Display a non-routine word problem. Have students hold up schema hand signals (T, D, C, EG). Review the self-monitoring question: "Did my schema diagram match the story's action?"
Detective Misconception Radar
Common Trap Why Students Fall For It Teacher Prompt / Schema Pivot Conflating Total & Change Both can involve addition; students miss temporal element. "Did someone receive something over time, or are we looking at a snapshot of two items side-by-side?" Inverting Difference Subtracting the small number from the difference instead of finding the larger. "Draw the tall bar and short bar first. Who has the longer bar? Does the question ask for the gap or the bar?" Premature Calculation Rushing to add all numbers found in the text. "Pencils down! Tell me the story without using numbers. What is happening in the scene?"
Tier 1: Support / Scaffold
Provide pre-drawn schema frames with color-coded blanks. Use tactile two-color counter bars before transition to symbolic numbers.
Tier 2: On-Level Target
Students select schema independently from the 4 models, write dual equations, and check reasonableness with estimation benchmarks.
Tier 3: Extension / Sleuth+
Have students craft their own multi-step "Cold Cases" using mixed schemas (e.g., Difference embedded inside Equal Groups) to challenge peers.
Sleuth Mastery Criteria Exit Standard
1. IdentificationCorrectly identifies underlying schemas in 2-step cases.
2. RepresentationLabels parts, wholes, changes, or group sizes accurately.
3. Mathematical LinkTranslates visual diagram into valid algebraic equations.
4. JustificationExplains why schema matches the real-world story.

The Trickster Clue
"Elena found 14 clues, which was 5 fewer than Marcus found."
The Trap: Seeing "fewer" and doing \(14 - 5 = 9\). But Marcus has more clues than Elena!
The Sleuth Mindset
1 Visualize the characters & their quantities.
2 Build the schema diagram before touching the numbers!
Sleuth Truth: Marcus has \(14 + 5 = 19\) clues! The structure reveals the truth.
Rule: Never compute before categorizing. Step 1 of Investigation
The 4 Master Problem Schemas
Every word problem fits a structure
1. Total
Combine
Parts combined into a single static total.
Part + Part = Total
2. Difference
Compare
Comparing two separate amounts side-by-side.
Greater - Lesser = Diff
3. Change
Timeline
A starting amount increases or decreases over time.
Start ± Change = End
4. Groups
Multiply
Equal-sized sets combined or divided.
Groups × Size = Total
Multi-step problems simply link two or more of these schemas together! Detective Toolkit
Case Demonstration #101
The Mystery Bakery Case
Equal Groups → Change
"Chef Maya baked 5 trays of cookies with 8 cookies on each tray . During the morning rush, customers bought 23 cookies . How many cookies are left?"
Step 1: Equal Groups Schema
Find the total cookies baked.
5 groups × 8 cookies = 40 cookies
Step 2: Change Schema
Start with total, subtract sold cookies.
40 (Start) - 23 (Change) = 17 left
Mystery Solved: Exactly 17 cookies remain on display. Schema Linked Successfully
