Area Split Squad

A 3rd-grade geometry and measurement lesson focused on finding the area of composite rectilinear figures with missing side lengths. Students use opposite-side relationships to deduce missing dimensions before decomposing shapes into non-overlapping rectangles to find total area.

Area Split Squad Answer Key: Teamwork

Page 3 Solutions • Problem 5 (We Do) & Problem 6 (Partner 1)

Page 3 • Answer Key

WE DO: PROBLEM 5 — SOLVED Total Area: 54 sq ft

Figure 5 (Horizontal Cut)

A: 24 B: 30 9 ft 4 ft 6 ft 6 ft 3 ft ?=10 ft

Step 1: Missing Base (?) = 4 ft + 6 ft

Missing (?) = 4 + 6 = 10 ft

Step 2: Decompose (Horizontal Cut)

Rect A: 4 ft × 6 ft = 24 sq ft

Rect B: 10 ft × 3 ft = 30 sq ft

Total Area: 24 + 30 = 54 sq ft

*Alt vertical cut: (4 × 9 = 36) + (6 × 3 = 18) = 54 sq ft.

PARTNER: PROBLEM 6 — SOLVED Total Area: 60 sq cm

Figure 6 (Vertical Cut)

A: 48 B: 12 8 cm 6 cm 5 cm ?=4 cm 3 cm 10 cm

Step 1: Missing Step (?) = 10 cm − 6 cm

Missing (?) = 10 − 6 = 4 cm

Step 2: Decompose (Vertical Cut)

Rect A: 6 cm × 8 cm = 48 sq cm

Rect B: 4 cm × 3 cm = 12 sq cm

Total Area: 48 + 12 = 60 sq cm

*Alt horizontal cut: (6 × 5 = 30) + (10 × 3 = 30) = 60 sq cm.

Area Split Squad Answer Key: Final Challenge

Page 4 Solutions • Problem 7 & Misconception Remediation Guide

Page 4 • Answer Key

PARTNER: PROBLEM 7 — SOLVED Total Area: 48 sq yd

Figure 7 (Horizontal Cut)

A: 24 B: 24 9 yd 4 yd ?=6 yd 4 yd 3 yd 8 yd

Step 1: Missing Drop (?) = 9 yd − 3 yd

Missing (?) = 9 − 3 = 6 yd

Step 2: Decompose (Horizontal Cut)

Rect A: 4 yd × 6 yd = 24 sq yd

Rect B: 8 yd × 3 yd = 24 sq yd

Total Area: 24 + 24 = 48 sq yd

*Alt vertical cut: (4 × 9 = 36) + (4 × 3 = 12) = 48 sq yd.

! 3rd Grade Misconception Alert & Coaching Guide

1. Axis Mixing Trap

Students try to subtract a horizontal side (e.g. 7 m) from a vertical side (e.g. 8 m). Prompt: "Is that side standing tall or lying flat?" Use colored pencils to highlight all vertical lines blue and horizontal lines orange.

2. Cut Dimension Trap

After making a cut, students sometimes reuse an entire side length that was cut in half. Prompt: "Did our cut line slice that side? If yes, measure only the piece touching your rectangle!"

3. Multiplying All Numbers

Students attempt to multiply 3 or 4 numbers together. Emphasize: "Only two numbers make a rectangle's area: Length × Width." Have them physically cover Rectangle B while calculating Rectangle A.

Step 3: Total Area 36 + 12 = 48 sq cm

✂️ Horizontal cut worked great here! Cutting vertically gives 28 + 20 = 48 sq cm too!

We Do Together

Problem 3: Guided Practice

Look at Page 2 of your packet

10 m 4 m 6 m 5 m ? m 9 m

Question 1: What is missing?

The right vertical side (? m). Look at left (10 m) and inner drop (6 m)!

10 m − 6 m = 4 m

Question 2: Where should we cut?

Cut vertically to get a 4 × 10 rectangle and a 5 × 4 rectangle!

Total Area: 40 + 20 = 60 sq m!

Fill in the scaffold boxes on your worksheet right now!

Partner Split Squad Protocol

Teamwork

👤 Partner A Role

  • • Problem 6: You are the Side Detective! Find the missing side length.
  • • Problem 7: Switch! Now you write the multiplication equations!

Always explain your thinking out loud!

👥 Partner B Role

  • • Problem 6: You are the Area Slicer! Choose the cut line and write equations.
  • • Problem 7: Switch! Now you hunt down the missing side length!

Double-check each other's addition!

🎯 Goal: Both partners must agree on the missing number AND the total square units!

Area Detectives: Mission Accomplished!

Class Wrap-Up

✓

Check Parallel Opposites

Horizontal matches horizontal. Vertical matches vertical. No mixing!

✂️

Any Cut Works If You Measure Carefully

Whether you slice vertically or horizontally, the total area is always identical.

Always Add at the End

Area A + Area B = Total Area (in square units)!

Great job, Area Split Squad! 🌟
