Instructional Dialogue: Prompt students to read the full ten-frame as a complete unit: "We don't need to count 1 to 10 each time—we know a full ten-frame is 10! Then we count on: 11, 12, 13, 14."

Common Misconception Alert: Students may write 14 = 10 + 14 or write the total in both blanks. Remind them: "We already took out the ten! What is leftover in the other ten-frame?" Have them point to and physically count only the extra ones.

Counters: 1 full 10-frame + 5 on top row + 1 on bottom row.
Problem 5: 17 Answer: 7
Number Bond: 17 splits into 10 and 7
Equation: 17 = 10 + 7
Counters: 1 full 10-frame + 5 on top row + 2 on bottom row.
Problem 6: 19 Answer: 9
Number Bond: 19 splits into 10 and 9
Equation: 19 = 10 + 9
Counters: 1 full 10-frame + 9 counters (only 1 blank spot left).
Problem 7: 20 (Challenge) Answer: 10
Number Bond: 20 splits into 10 and 10
Equation: 20 = 10 + 10

Tiered Teacher Support Strategies
1. Concrete Support
Provide two physical egg cartons or foam 10-frames with two-color counters (red for the 10, yellow for ones). Physically move the ones aside.
For tactile learners
2. Verbal Scaffolding
Use the "Hide Zero" cards technique: Place the single-digit card over the zero of a "10" card, then pull it apart to show the hidden 10.
For verbal/visual connection
3. Extension Prompt
