1. Understanding Math Terms: Action Verbs vs. Math Symbols
In English, we say “add” for the action and “plus” for the sign (+). Spanish works the exact same way! Notice the distinction between the verb (what you do) and the operator (the symbol you read):
- Sumar (verb) = to add (the action of calculating a sum).
- Más (operator sign +) = plus (the word you say for “+”).
- Es igual a (=) = equals / is equal to.
- Spoken Equation Example: 4 + 3 = 7
“Cuatro más tres es igual a siete.”
− SUBTRACTION (La Resta)
- Restar (verb) = to subtract (the action of taking away).
- Menos (operator sign −) = minus (the word you say for “−”).
- Es igual a (=) = equals / is equal to.
- Spoken Equation Example: 9 − 4 = 5
“Nueve menos cuatro es igual a cinco.”
