Instructional Objective
Students will identify coefficient, variable, and constant and determine if terms are "like terms" by checking their variable packages.
The Warehouse Analogy
Variables are types of boxes (Box \(x\) or Box \(y\)). Coefficients are the count of boxes. Constants are loose bricks with no boxes!

Unboxing the Term (10 Mins): Show Day 1 Slides. Break down \(7x\). "The number out front is the Warehouse Manager—the Coefficient! The letter is the box type—the Variable!"

Guided Notes & Sort (15 Mins): Pass out Guided Notes. Model circling like terms. Explain that like terms must have the exact same box type . A box of \(x\) and a box of \(x^2\) are NOT like terms (one is a tiny box, one is cargo size!).

Color-Coding Practice (15 Mins): Have students complete the Color-Coding Sort. Provide colored highlighters (Yellow for \(x\), Orange for constants, Green for \(y\)) to prevent visual overload.
Intervention Alerts & Scaffolding
The Invisible 1: Students see \(x\) and write coefficient = 0. Remind them: "If you see a box of \(x\), there is exactly 1 box there! Coefficient = 1."
Sign Attachment: Students separate signs from numbers. Teach them that the sign (+ or -) is the glue stuck to the front of the number.
Variable Matching: Emphasize that \(3a\) and \(3b\) are NOT like terms. "You can't stack apples and bananas in the same pile!"

Review & Connection (5 Mins): Quickly quiz students on yesterday's terms. "Can I stack a box of \(a\) on top of a box of \(b\)? No! They must match."

The Stacking Rule (15 Mins): Show Day 2 Slides. Model combining \(3x + 2x\) by drawing 3 squares labeled \(x\) and 2 squares labeled \(x\). Count them together. Highlight that the variable \(x\) *does not change* to \(x^2\)! "We are stacking boxes, not making new items."

Task Card Collaboration (20 Mins): Distribute Task Cards. Let students work in pairs. Emphasize that they must identify which terms are likes, draw shapes around them (circles for \(x\), triangles for \(y\)), and then add coefficients.

The Exponent Trap: Students will write \(3x + 2x = 5x^2\). Prevent this by holding up physical items (e.g., 2 dry-erase markers + 1 marker = 3 markers, NOT markers-squared!).
Separating the Variables: If students combine \(4x + 3y\) into \(7xy\), ask: "If you stack 4 boxes of apples and 3 boxes of bananas, do they magically become 7 boxes of apple-bananas? No, they stay separate!"

Avoid the Variable Trap!
A common warehouse error that ruins our stock balance.
Wrong: \(4a + 3a = 7a²\)
Adding packages together does not change the item inside! They do not turn into "squared" items.
Correct: \(4a + 3a = 7a\)
The letter represents the box type. 4 boxes of \(a\) plus 3 boxes of \(a\) is simply 7 boxes of \(a\)!
Pro Tip: If you see just a with no number, remember it has an invisible 1 out front!
Sorting Double Shelves
What happens when we have different types of items mixed together?
Expression: 5x + 4 + 2x + 3
Shelf X (Box stack) 5x + 2x = 7x
Shelf Constants (Bricks) 4 + 3 = 7
Combined Warehouse Answer: 7x + 7
Remember: You cannot add the \(7x\) and the \(7\)! They are different shelves and must stay separate.

Students will combine terms with both positive and negative coefficients using the "Sign Soldiers" visual integer tile model to identify and cancel zero pairs.
Asset vs. Debt Metaphor
"Positive coefficients are Assets (Gold Yellow Boxes). Negative coefficients are Debts (Red Fire Boxes). When a Gold Box meets a Red Box, they cancel out!"

Unveiling the Soldiers (10 Mins): Show Day 3 Slides. Model \(5x + (-3x)\). Draw 5 yellow circles with a "+" inside (or write "+x") and 3 red circles with a "-" inside (or "-x"). Circle and "kill" the zero pairs. 2 positive \(x\)'s survive! Result: \(2x\).

Sign Attachment Rule (10 Mins): Point out that the sign is glued to the coefficient! In \(4x - 6x\), the 6 has a minus glued to it, meaning it's 4 positive soldiers vs. 6 negative soldiers. "Who wins? The negatives, by 2! Result = \(-2x\)."

Guided Tile Practice (20 Mins): Pass out Guided Notes. Help students literally draw the circles and slash through the zero pairs. This physical crossing-out is critical for visual learners.
Intervention Alerts & Scaffolding
Ignoring the Negative: Students see \(3x - 5x\) and write \(2x\). Force them to circle the terms WITH their sign: 3x and -5x. Ask: "Who has more soldiers?"
Over-canceling: Ensure students are pairing exactly ONE positive with ONE negative. Draw circles side-by-side to make pairing obvious.
