Sign Detectives: Plus & Minus Mastery

Detective Mystery Hook: Gather students on the rug. Put on imaginary detective glasses (circles with hands). Display the giant plus (+) and minus (−) signs.
Teacher Script: "Detectives! Today we are cracking math mysteries. We already know what these symbols look like, but each symbol holds a secret mission! Look at Plus (+). Plus is a friendly builder—whenever Plus appears, we PUT TOGETHER ! Cross your arms like Plus! Now look at Minus (−). Minus is a sly subtractor—whenever Minus appears, we TAKE AWAY ! Hold one arm flat like Minus!"
Concrete Demonstration: Place 3 counters in your left hand. Add 2 counters from your right hand. Have students shout: "Put together! That's a PLUS!" Next, hold 5 counters and remove 2. Have students whisper: "Take away! That's a MINUS!"
