The giant panda is a large bear that lives in the bamboo forests high in the mountains of central China. Pandas have distinctive black and white fur that helps them blend in with their snowy and rocky habitat. They spend about 12 hours a day eating bamboo because it does not provide a lot of energy.

5 Days Sequence Length
The Instructional Goal
This sequence is designed to move students from passive highlighting (coloring the page) to active extraction and organization . In special education settings, students often struggle with "essentiality"—knowing what actually matters. By physically moving ideas onto cards and then into a visual guide, we make the abstract process of summarizing concrete and tactile.
Essential Question
"How can we use the pieces we highlighted to build something new?"
Materials Needed
Bright yellow highlighters (one per student)
Large and small index cards (or sticky notes)
Glue sticks and scissors
Markers (thick and thin tips)

Highlight Rescue
Key Move: Transition from "everything matters" to the "Keyword Rule" (1-3 words per line).

Mining for Nuggets
Key Move: Physical transcription. Transferring keywords to physical cards creates a 1:1 relationship between an idea and an object.

The Great Sort
Key Move: Organizational flexibility. Students must physically move cards to find a logical sequence (Time, Importance, Category).

The Expert Build
Key Move: Synthesis. Using visual tools (arrows, headers) to show relationships between the extracted ideas.

Key Move: Validation. Peer review proves that the summary is clear enough for others to learn from.
Differentiation & Support
Scaffolding
For students with writing difficulties, allow them to dictate keywords to an adult or use speech-to-text. You can also provide pre-cut cards in different colors for main ideas vs. details.
Executive Function
Use a timer for the "Sort" phase to prevent over-thinking. Provide a model "Expert Guide" from a previous year or a different topic to show exactly what the finished build looks like.
