Lesson 1: Meet the Giants
2nd Grade Math
Objective
Students will identify yardsticks and meter sticks and explain their physical relationship to a standard 12-inch ruler (e.g., 3 rulers = 1 yardstick).
Essential Question
"How do we decide which tool and unit are best for measuring different sized objects?"
Materials Needed
12-inch Rulers (enough for pairs)
Yardsticks (one per group/demo)
Meter Sticks (demo)
Tape (to stick rulers together)
01. The Hook (5-10 mins)
Show students a standard 12-inch ruler.
"Today, we are going to measure the length of our classroom whiteboard. If I only use this tiny ruler, what do you think will happen? Is it the best tool for the job?"
Teacher Tip:
Actually start measuring the whiteboard with the small ruler. Intentionally make it look tedious and easy to lose your place. Listen for students suggesting a 'bigger ruler'.
02. Giant Comparison (15 mins)
Hands-on Discovery: Hand out 3 rulers to pairs of students. Ask them to line them up end-to-end.
Script: "We call this a 'Yard'. How many rulers long is one yard? If one ruler is 12 inches, how many inches do you think are in this whole yardstick?"
Invite a student to hold the yardstick against the 3 rulers to confirm the fit.
Repeat the process with the Meter Stick, showing it is just slightly longer than the yardstick.
03. Guiding Questions
