Equation Special Cases
Discover the number of solutions by inspecting coefficients and constants

The Math Shortcut: Don't Solve!
When an equation is simplified into \(ax + b = cx + d\), you never need to isolate \(x\) or move terms across the equals sign. Simply compare the variable coefficients and the constant terms!
Part 1
The Three Inspection Rules
One Solution Single Value
• Coefficients: DIFFERENT
• Constants: Can be anything
\(3x + 5 = \mathbf{7}x - 2\)
Different amounts of \(x\) on each side will always balance at exactly one specific value.
No Solution \(\emptyset\) (Impossible)
• Coefficients: SAME
• Constants: DIFFERENT
\(\mathbf{4}x + \mathbf{9} = \mathbf{4}x - \mathbf{1}\)
Equal amounts of \(x\) plus different numbers can never be equal (e.g. \(9 = -1\)).
Identity \(\infty\) Solutions
• Coefficients: SAME
• Constants: SAME
\(\mathbf{6}x - \mathbf{8} = \mathbf{6}x - \mathbf{8}\)
Both sides are identical expressions. The equation is true for every possible value of \(x\).
Guided Walkthrough: Inspecting Directly
\(5x + 3 = 2x + 9\)
• Left Coeff: 5 | Right: 2
• Coeffs are: Different
→ One Solution
\(8x - 4 = 8x + 10\)
• Coeffs: 8 & 8 (Same)
• Constants: -4 & 10 (Diff)
→ No Solution
\(-3x + 7 = -3x + 7\)
• Coeffs: -3 & -3 (Same)
• Constants: 7 & 7 (Same)
→ Identity (\(\infty\))
Part 2
Direct Inspection Practice
Do not solve! Fill in the blanks.
| Given Equation | Coefficients (Same / Diff?) | Constants (Same / Diff?) | Number of Solutions |
|---|
| \(9x + 12 = 9x - 3\) | | | |
| \(6x - 1 = -2x - 1\) | | | |
| \(-4x + 8 = -4x + 8\) | | | |
| \(x + 15 = 15 + x\) | | | |
| \(10 - 3x = 5x + 10\) | | | |

Level 2: Simplify First, Inspect Second!
The Golden Boundary Rule
1. Treat each side like its own island:
Distribute parentheses and combine like terms on the LEFT. Then do the same on the RIGHT.
2. NEVER cross the equals sign:
Do NOT add or subtract terms across sides. Once each side has one variable term and one constant, STOP and inspect!
Part 3
Simplify & Inspect Practice
Simplify each side independently. Do NOT solve for \(x\)!
Problem 1 \(2(4x + 3) = 8x + 10\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Problem 2 \(9x - 4x + 2 = 5x + 2\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Problem 3 \(3(2x - 1) = 2(3x - 1)\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Problem 4 \(4(x + 2) - 5 = 7x + 3\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Problem 5 \(6(x - 2) = 2x + 4x - 12\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Problem 6 \(10x - 2x + 4 = 3(2x + 1) + 5\)
Simplify each side:
Coeffs: Const: Sol:
Inspection Mastery Check
A classmate simplifies an equation and gets \(4x + 11 = 9x + 11\). They claim: “Because both constants are 11, this must have infinitely many solutions!” Explain why they are incorrect:
Rule: Different Coefficients = Always 1 Solution, regardless of constants! Page 2 of 2
