Part 1: Trace and Write Answers
Evaluation Criteria
16 Numeral 1 down; 6 begins top, curves down into a closed loop at bottom. Target: 16
17 Numeral 1 down; 7 starts top headline, goes straight right, slants to baseline. Target: 17
18 Numeral 8 formed with continuous “S” curve; avoids detached snowmen circles. Target: 18
19 Numeral 9 circle sits between headline and midline; straight vertical stem down. Target: 19
20 Numeral 2 curves clockwise and slides along baseline; 0 is an oval touching base. Target: 20

Observational Diagnostic Notes:
• Subitizing: Look for students who automatically say “ten” for the first complete frame rather than counting each dot from one.
• Number formation: Check for reversal in digits 6 and 7, and ensure numeral 1 precedes the ones digit consistently.

1. Concrete 5 Mins
Give each student 20 two-color counters and the Guided Practice Mat . Have students immediately fill the top frame with 10 red counters. Keep that ten intact!
2. Representational 5 Mins
Draw a numeral card (e.g., 18). Students add 8 yellow counters to the bottom frame. Prompt them to quick-draw their counters on the dry-erase mat using circles.
3. Abstract 5 Mins
Students write the number sentence: 10 + 8 = 18. Choral read: “18 is 10 ones and 8 extra ones.”
Scripted Teacher Questioning & Dialogue
Subitizing & Ten Foundation:
“Look at the first ten-frame. Do we need to count each dot starting from 1? Why not? Right, because when it is full, we know it is ALWAYS ten! Put your finger on it and say: 10!”
Counting On from 10:
“We have 10. Let's count on together to make 17: 10... [point to second frame] 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17! How many extra ones did we add to 10?”
Connecting to 20:
“Look at 19. How many more dots do we need to make 20? Only ONE more! When both ten-frames are completely full, we have TWO tens, which makes 20!”
Recommended Manipulatives for Small-Group Table:
• Two-color counters (red for the full ten, yellow for the loose ones to visually separate tens and ones).
• Unifix / Snap Cubes in two contrasting colors (a rod of 10 plus loose individual cubes).
• Numeral flashcards 16–20 for students to pick and model independently.

Group Observations
Common Teen Number Misconceptions & Rapid Interventions
!
Reversal of Digits (e.g., writing 71 instead of 17, or 61 instead of 16):
Fix: Physically place the “10” card down first. Then slide the ones card (e.g. 7) right over the zero. Remind students: “The 1 always stands first because it stands for the ten!”
!
Counting All from One (Inefficient Counting):
Fix: Cover the full ten-frame with a card labeled “10”. Tap the card and say “10”, then uncover and touch only the ones (11, 12, 13...). Practice counting on repeatedly.
