3-Digit × 2-Digit Multiplication
Name:
Date:
The Big Secret: Multiplying 321 × 45 is simply breaking the problem into two smaller parts:
(321 × 5 ones) + (321 × 40 tens) = Final Product
1 Multiply by the Ones Digit (5) Row 1
- • 5 × 1 = 5 (write 5 in ones column)
- • 5 × 2 = 10 (write 0, carry +1 above 3)
- • 5 × 3 = 15 (+ 1 carried = 16)
- ➔ First Partial Product: 1,605
2 Write the Placeholder Zero! Crucial
Before multiplying by 4, write a 0 in the ones column of the second row. Why? The digit 4 is in the tens place, so its real value is 40!
3 Multiply by the Tens Digit (4) Row 2
- • Cross out old regrouped numbers (+1)
- • 4 × 1 = 4 | 4 × 2 = 8 | 4 × 3 = 12
- ➔ Second Partial Product: 12,840
4 Add the Two Partial Products Final Step
Add down each column carefully: 1,605 + 12,840 = 14,445

1 Row 1: Ones product (321 × 5)
0 Boxed 0: Placeholder for the 40 (tens)
2 Row 2: Tens product (321 × 40)
Quick Rule of Thumb
A 3-digit number times a 2-digit number always yields a 4-digit or 5-digit answer!

1 Ghost Carries
Slash out old carried digits immediately after Step 1 so you don't accidentally add them during Step 3!
2 Column Drifting
Keep digits aligned in strict vertical columns (Ones under Ones, Tens under Tens) for clean addition.
The Estimate Check
Round to check: 300 × 50 = 15,000. Since 14,445 is close to 15,000, it passes!
