A Translation is a SLIDE
When a shape or point slides to a new location, it does not turn or change size. Just count the squares directly on the grid!
X Left or Right: Count along the horizontal x-axis line.
Y Up or Down: Count along the vertical y-axis line.
Example Slide Point A: 3 units Right, 2 units Up
x y 2 4 2 4 A (1, 1) A' (4, 3)
1 Start at Point A (1, 1).
2 Count 3 squares Right (dashed blue line).
3 Count 2 squares Up (dashed green line).
4 Mark the new point with a dot! Name it A' (4, 3).
Problem 1: Slide a Single Point
x y -4 -2 2 4 2 -2 P
Point P starts at (-3, 2).
Rule: Slide Point P 5 units Right and 3 units Down.
- Count 5 squares right from P, then 3 squares down.
- Draw the new point on the grid and label it P'.
New coordinates for P': ( , )
Problem 2: Slide a Line Segment
x y -2 2 4 2 -2 J K
Slide line segment JK: 4 units Right and 2 units Down.
💡 Tip: Slide point J first. Then slide point K. Connect them with a straight line!
New Point J': ( , )
New Point K': ( , )

A Reflection is a FLIP
A reflection creates a mirror image across a mirror line (the axis). Rule: The new point is the exact same number of squares from the line, just on the opposite side!
y Flip over y-axis: Jump sideways across the vertical line.
x Flip over x-axis: Jump up or down across the horizontal line.
Example Reflect Point M over the y-axis (vertical mirror line)
x y (mirror) -3 3 M (3, 2) M' (-3, 2)
1 Find Point M (3, 2). Notice the green y-axis mirror line.
2 Count squares to the mirror: Point M is 3 squares to the right.
3 Jump across the mirror line: Count 3 squares to the left.
4 Plot the new point! It lands at M' (-3, 2).
Problem 1: Flip across the Y-Axis
x y -4 -2 2 4 3 B
Point B is at (-2, 3). Reflect it across the y-axis.
1. How many squares is Point B from the y-axis? squares
2. Count that same distance to the other side and plot B'.
New coordinates for B': ( , )
Problem 2: Flip across the X-Axis
x y -2 2 4 2 -2 -4 C
Point C is at (3, 2). Reflect it across the x-axis (the green horizontal line).
1. How many squares down to the x-axis? squares
2. Count that same distance down below the line and plot C'.
New coordinates for C': ( , )
Quick Concept Check
Draw a line connecting each move to its everyday action word:
1. Translation
2. Reflection
A. FLIP (Mirror)
B. SLIDE (Move)
