Teacher Facilitation Guide
Grade 3rd
Learning Objective
Students will accurately read and interpret dual-scale thermometers, identifying temperatures in both Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C) . Students will associate specific temperatures with real-world conditions and clothing choices.
Materials Needed
Dual Scale Slide Deck
Reading the Red Line Worksheet
Temperature Bingo Cards
Bingo Chips or Markers
Real analog thermometers (optional)
Key Benchmarks
Freezing 32°F / 0°C
Warm Day 80°F / 27°C
Fall Day 60°F / 16°C
Boiling 212°F / 100°C
Lesson Plan

Minutes
Hook: The Double Gauge
Pass around real analog thermometers or display the first slide. Ask: "Why do you think there are two sets of numbers on one thermometer?"
"If one side says 32 and the other says 0, is it two different temperatures or the same temperature with different names?"
05
Minutes
Video Viewing
Play Homeschool Pop: Fahrenheit & Celsius . Focus specifically on 1:11-1:29 for the dual scale introduction.
Pause Points:
1:11 : "Can you find where the liquid would be if it were freezing?"
2:01 : Discuss travel. "In France, if the sign says 30°, do you need a coat or swimsuit?"
3:25 : Predict the boiling temperature before revealing it.
20
Minutes
Activity: Reading the Red Line
Students complete the worksheet. They must identify the red line level on BOTH scales simultaneously. They then match the temperature to the appropriate clothing item.
Scaffold: Encourage students to use a ruler to slide horizontally across from the red line to both scales to ensure accuracy.
Challenge: Ask students to estimate the temperature of a "comfortable classroom" in both scales (approx 20°C / 68°F).
10
Minutes
Group Check & Discussion
Project the worksheet and go over answers. Focus on 0°C vs 32°F. Ask: "Which scale has larger gaps between the numbers? Why might that be?" (Fahrenheit has smaller degree increments than Celsius).

Minutes
Closure: Thermometer Bingo
Quick-fire game. Teacher calls out a condition or a temperature on one scale; students find the matching square (sometimes on the other scale!).

How to Read It
1
Look at the Line
Find the top of the red liquid. That's your target!
2
Slide Left
Move horizontally to read the numbers on the left scale.
3
Slide Right
Move horizontally to read the numbers on the right scale.
Check your labels! Is Celsius on the left or the right? It changes on different tools!
