Concrete Modeling: Set the Problem
Say: "Today, we are going to draw hundreds, tens, and ones to build numbers. Let's model \( 146 + 275 \). To build \( 146 \), draw 1 flat square for hundreds, 4 tall rods for tens, and 6 tiny dots for ones. Do the same for \( 275 \) right beneath it."
Tip: Have students draw dots in 5-frames (columns of 5) to instantly see ten-frames without counting manually.

Regrouping Ones (The "Trade Up")
Say: "Let's look at our ones dots. We have \( 6 + 5 = 11 \) dots. Can we make a group of 10? Yes! Circle 10 ones. Let's trade them. Cross out that circle and draw 1 new tens rod in the tens column. How many ones are left? Yes, just \( 1 \)."

Regrouping Tens
Say: "Let's count our tens. We have the 4 rods from \( 146 \), the 7 rods from \( 275 \), plus the 1 new rod we traded. That's 12 tens rods! Can we group 10 tens rods? Yes! Circle 10 tens rods. Let's trade them. Cross out the circle and draw 1 new hundreds flat in the hundreds column. How many tens rods are left outside the circle? Correct, \( 2 \)."

Final Count
Say: "Finally, let's count our hundreds. We have the 1 flat from \( 146 \), 2 flats from \( 275 \), plus the 1 new hundreds flat. That's 4 hundreds flats. So, our final total is 4 hundreds, 2 tens, and 1 one. What is our number? Yes, \( 421 \)!"
